For celebrity stylist and author Erin Walsh, assembling outfits for a press tour is all about the ability to adapt on the fly. "Creating a press tour is a continuous conversation," Walsh explained. "You may have ideas about what will work, but you must adjust as events unfold in real time." Walsh worked alongside her client, Anne Hathaway, in preparation for one of this year's most eagerly awaited (and stylish) films: The Devil Wears Prada 2. In the latest episode of The Who What Wear Podcast, Walsh discusses the preparation for such a significant press tour, her experiences working with stars like Selena Gomez, and more.

Continuing below are excerpts from their discussion. Given the immense anticipation surrounding the film and the press appearances, you mentioned that you like to start with how someone desires to feel. What was the process like, and what were some key elements that shaped this tour?

Creating a press tour like this involves ongoing dialogue. You can make decisions based on your expectations, but you must be ready to adapt as situations arise. You collaborate with a cast, aiming to evolve the work continually, refining and optimizing it. One aspect I appreciate about the original film is its exploration of fashion's depth and the joy it can provide, along with its transformative power. Thus, finding ways to express these themes through our fashion choices on this tour was essential, utilizing every fashion tool available to us—from color, texture, shape, and silhouette to designer selection. We wanted to highlight emerging designers while honoring our favorites. At its core, fashion should bring us joy.

I want to discuss Tokyo. Anne donned a stunning ruffled Valentino couture dress and a revised version of the Rockstud heel, which also subtly referenced the trailer. Can you explain the significance of that outfit and shoe choice for Tokyo?

That outfit felt like a particularly fitting way to begin our journey in Asia, specifically Tokyo. The origami-inspired design of the dress was very evocative of Japanese aesthetics. The color palette was spot-on. I adored the white Rockstud shoes; the new design is wonderful and incredibly flattering, with a beautifully positioned ankle strap and two toe openings. It's simply stunning—an excellent update to a style many believed had run its course. If I were to wager, I would confidently say it’s making a comeback and looking better than ever.

Now, let’s talk about Selena Gomez. It seems you’ve ushered in a new era of style for her. Can you share how you focused on the most crucial element, which is Selena and her essence, in building her style?

First and foremost, she's a remarkable and beautiful individual, using her platform to improve the world and genuinely connect with others. To me, it's essential that everything feels authentic and clear, solely serving to amplify her and her message. I’ve discovered that with her, simplicity is often more effective, allowing her natural beauty to shine through has been our main focus.

I want to mention an early look you created together for the VMAs, where she wore a custom red beaded Oscar de la Renta gown that went viral. What are some of your preferred references or designers for Selena?

When it comes to references, we really tapped into the vibe of Old Hollywood, drawing inspiration from icons like Sophia Loren, focusing on décolletage shapes, rich colors, and striking yet streamlined silhouettes—avoiding anything overly complicated or overwhelming. The glam team is incredible, and everyone she collaborates with is supportive. We all came together with the shared goal of "How do we convey this story?" Our unity strengthens the overall outcome. Generally, when working with someone and their glam team, it’s crucial to collaborate and ensure everyone is aligned. It creates a more potent result when cohesive.
