      When it comes to fragrances, I can sincerely say that most of the compliments I receive about my scents come from French perfumes. More specifically, there's one fragrance house that consistently earns me compliments every week: Matiere Premiere. You might be familiar with some of its scents, particularly Vanilla Powder, which has achieved viral fame due to its delightful gourmand aroma; however, it boasts many other remarkable fragrances in its lineup that you should explore.

      Co-founded by master perfumer Aurélien Guichard, Matiere Premiere—meaning "raw material"—concentrates on specific ingredients to create an abundance of natural elements, whether that’s vanilla, tuberose, or wood. Each chosen ingredient shines as the primary note in every fragrance, enhanced to highlight its beauty. The outcome? Exceptionally beautiful perfumes. Guichard, a seventh-generation perfumer, is unique in being the only perfumer globally who cultivates and harvests his own natural ingredients for Matiere Premiere, adding to their exclusivity. I discovered the brand a few years back, and after trying nearly all its fragrances (it offers excellent discovery sets, by the way), I’ve identified my all-time favorites that I must share.       Among the 100+ fragrances in my collection, this ranks easily within my top three most-complimented perfumes ever. Vanilla Powder is the brand's bestseller and is available in both eau de parfum and extrait de parfum. I adore both versions, but the extrait has a richer, creamier tonka bean essence that makes it even more tempting, in my opinion. Instead of a sugary vanilla dessert, it has a warm, enveloping scent reminiscent of stepping into a soft cloud of toasted vanilla powder. Honestly, every time I wear it, someone inquires about the fragrance—its sillage and longevity are outstanding, creating a gourmand aura wherever you go. It’s one of the best vanilla scents ever, and I’ll definitely be replenishing it when I run out.

It’s both refreshing and creamy, with an intriguing twist of green fig leaf that keeps you sniffing your wrists repeatedly due to its captivating, skin-like scent. I reach for this on days when I desire a musky yet clean aroma. I’ve also tried the Hand and Body Lotion (£60) and Hair Perfume (£67) in this scent, and wearing them together always garners compliments.

      This one is so exquisite that I nearly want to keep it a secret. If you appreciate creamy white floral fragrances, you must try it. The creamy tuberose stands out, aptly dubbed the "queen of the night"—this sensual flower blooms at night in Grasse, France, and is harvested by Matiere Premiere to capture its mesmerizing scent.

It features French lavender intertwined with a metallic hint of cool, silver metal that introduces an unexpected twist to this floral fragrance, combining sweet lavender from Provence with a distinctive metallic quality from lavandin essence.
