Forget about contouring—this is how beauty editors truly shape their faces.

I have to admit something: when it comes to makeup, I'm not great at contouring. You might wonder, "Is it really such a big issue?" Of course, in the larger picture, it's not, but as a beauty editor and trained makeup artist, it feels a bit ridiculous to admit I struggle with one of the major makeup trends of 2026. The most frustrating part is that I possess some of the top contour sticks available, yet I still find it challenging to enhance my (rather lacking) cheekbones. My goal is to achieve a subtle contour that gives the impression of naturally sculpted features, which seems to be quite difficult to accomplish.

So, when I had the opportunity to attend a masterclass led by the renowned makeup artist Wendy Rowe, and she introduced me to "tantouring," I was instantly intrigued. It's a natural, glowing, and easy way to contour this summer without using any bronzer, and it just might become my new favorite technique. Keep reading to learn more…

What is Tantouring? As hinted by the name, tantouring focuses on contouring with self-tanner instead of your standard bronzer. "Tantouring is about gently creating structure and definition. It's contouring, but through tonal application rather than makeup," Rowe explains. "I’ve always thought skin should appear like skin, and what I appreciate about tantouring is that it integrates into the face rather than sitting on top of it."

So, what does this process entail? "You’re softly warming and defining the areas where the sun naturally hits—the cheekbones, temples, jawline—so the face appears healthy, lifted, and well-rested," Rowe conveys. "It’s incredibly refined because it’s so seamless. You can hardly tell what’s been applied; you simply look better."

      How to Tantour

Sounds great, right? While I was completely convinced by the concept of tantouring, I was initially concerned about my ability to do it at home. Fortunately, it's quite simple. "The key to tantouring is to keep it light and instinctive," Rowe advises. "I suggest doing it at night, as it works well as an overnight skin treatment as well as a way to enhance your complexion."

Rowe recommends starting with clean skin, then mixing a few drops of your chosen tanning drops (she favors the Three Warriors Hydrabronze Tan Drops) into your moisturizer, applying it all over your face for "hydration and warmth." After that, use a soft brush to apply the mixture to the same areas you would typically contour with a stick or powder. Rowe suggests applying the drops beneath the cheekbones, around the temples, along the jawline, and even lightly through the eye socket.

"The beauty of this technique is that you won’t really notice it as you apply it," she points out. "It’s sheer, blends seamlessly, and is very forgiving. There are no harsh contour lines, nor any obvious tan lines. You are essentially adding tone and structure that develops gradually. The next morning, you awaken with a fresher, healthier, and more defined look."

      My Tantouring Experience

I must admit, I was a little hesitant to try this method myself, but it turned out to be incredibly easy. I applied my tanning drops at night and woke up with a naturally bronzed and sculpted complexion. In the morning, I applied my foundation and skipped bronzer entirely, allowing my tantour to shine throughout the day. This not only saved me time in the morning but also left me thrilled with the effortless result. I’ll definitely be incorporating this into my routine all summer long.
