The Festival Season Has Arrived: 16 Accessories That Hairstylists Predict Will Be Popular This Year
As summer approaches, it’s hard to overlook that festival season is well underway. Coachella already made waves with standout performances from Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, and Karol G, but there’s still a lineup of festivals ahead. If you have any of these major events marked on your calendar, chances are you’re contemplating what to wear and how to style your beauty look. If you’re particularly interested in this year’s hair trends, I’m excited to share that hair accessories are making a big comeback (and no, I’m not referring to the flower crowns that were all the rage in 2016). A fresh collection of accessories has emerged, or at least received a modern twist. To get the details, I consulted two celebrity hairstylists to learn about the hair essentials that will be trending everywhere. Read on to add more items to your festival wish list.
**Crochet Beanies**
These crochet beanies have been increasingly popular over the past few months, so it’s no surprise they’re also seen at festivals. "Crochet headbands and hats are very fashionable this season," says celebrity master stylist Steph Angelone from RPZL. "During festival season, they’re a fun way to keep your hair off your face while staying cool and stylish."
If you want to add a touch of glam and prefer a lighter shade, check out this bronze version from Free People, complete with defined sequins. This look is also available in blue and ivory.
For those who lean toward gold, Urban Outfitters offers a less structured, oversized option for just $25, which also comes in white and black.
For added coverage, consider this white crochet cap from Free People.
**Hair Clips**
Claw clips have made a resurgence in recent years, and since I own this particular clip, I had to include it. "From oversized metallic barrettes and gem-encrusted clips to sculptural claw clips, these accessories will remain festival staples for their combination of style and functionality," states celebrity hairstylist Nick Stenson. "They easily enhance any hairstyle, keeping hair secure while serving as a striking fashion statement."
To support Stenson's remark about metallic barrettes, these affordable star clips provide a great way to add a bit of flair to any ensemble.
Hair tinsel is a stylish and playful way to make your hair stand out, and at just $10, it’s an excellent buy.
Neon jelly clips are equally in vogue. "These clips match perfectly with the lively, festive atmosphere of summer music festivals, helping to secure a full head of hair while embracing a carefree vibe," adds Angelone.
**Charms, Cuffs, and Gems**
For those styling braids or locs, this 25-piece set of hair cuffs and charms offers plenty of options to enhance your look. "Decorative rings, cuffs, and charms threaded through braids and twists are on-trend, thanks to their customizable, Y2K-meets-boho style," explains Angelone. "They enable wearers to personalize their style without committing to a complete accessory."
If you’re not ready to invest in a whole set of charms, you can opt for a smaller pack for just $8.
"The party cuff from RPZL can be worn alone for a bold statement, or you can stack several along a long ponytail for a more layered look,” Angelone suggests.
"Gems woven into hair are becoming increasingly popular this festival season," notes Stenson. "Whether incorporated into subtle accent braids or scattered through loose waves, they instantly add texture to your look."
**Head Scarves and Bandanas**
Hair scarves and bandanas are perennial festival favorites, so it’s no surprise that our experts expect them to make a comeback. "Lightweight and versatile, hair scarves offer a relaxed, bohemian touch while securing your hair during long outdoor events," says Stenson. "They’re also a simple way to introduce color or patterns into your outfit while protecting your hair from the sun."
If bold colors aren't your preference, try this neutral option from Urban Outfitters for $15.
This long, vibrant red scarf is sure to catch the eye and shield your hair from the sun during late-night festivals.
Available in four colors, this gorgeous abstract head scarf from AWAYTR is easy to tie for a laid-back look.
