Camila Mendes has raised the standard for sultry summer glamour—check out this behind-the-scenes breakdown.

      Summer has officially arrived, bringing with it a fresh (and hotter) beauty aesthetic that features glowing skin, breezy hair, and sultry eyes or lips—the options are limitless. In this month’s Now Playing Issue (which additionally showcases Victoria Monet and Jonathan Daviss), Camila Mendes serves as the ultimate inspiration with her ultra-glamorous burgundy lip, glossy eyes, and shiny, lightly tousled hair. Hairstylist Lauren Palmer-Smith and makeup artist Jen Tioseco are sharing all the behind-the-scenes details on their specific processes and favorite products. Keep reading for everything you need to know about Mendes's enchanting summer beauty look.

      Palmer-Smith kicks things off by explaining that the aim for this photoshoot was to achieve effortless glamour with a “cool-girl, editorial” vibe. To create Mendes’s wet look, she utilized a personal favorite combo: water and Shu Uemura's Essence Absolu Nourishing Protective Hair Oil ($42). For Mendes’s soft, dry look featured below, Palmer-Smith opted for Chris McMillan's The Dry Texture and Volume Spray ($38) and a 5/8-inch curling iron (the one from Hot Tools is a great choice) to add a hint of soft texture.

      “In addition to the Chris McMillan texture spray, there are three hair products I always bring to set when working with celebrity clients,” Palmer-Smith reveals. “My Bumble and bumble Spray de Mode Flexible Hold Hairspray ($29), my Oribe Maximista Hair Thickening Spray ($42), and my Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Hair Cream ($54).”

      Regarding makeup, Tioseco emphasizes the importance of making a statement in one area when working with Mendes, whether it's her skin, lips, or eyes. For this shoot, the emphasis was placed on the skin and lips, keeping the eyes simple with a gloss for a genuine editorial appearance. "After Cami's fitting, it was clear that the clothes would be the highlight of the shoot," Tioseco explains. "We decided to start with a clean and fresh base and build each look as the shoot progressed. I used the Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Foundation ($52)—the range is fantastic for olive and golden skin tones—and chose the bold burgundy lip because it felt striking yet complementary without overshadowing the outfits. Cami is stunning, so it’s always challenging to select just one focal point.”

      Naturally, skin preparation is the most crucial part of Tioseco’s routine, especially when significant attention will be placed on a client's skin during an event or shoot. "If the skincare isn't right, no matter which foundation I use, the final result won't be appealing," she says.

      To begin the process with Mendes, Tioseco cleansed the actress's skin with Danucera's Cerabalm ($92) to gently refresh the skin, followed by the brand’s D22 Tonic ($42) applied with a cotton round in a lifting motion to refine and prep the complexion. Next, she pressed the Mega Serum ($165) containing vitamin C and niacinamide into Mendes’s skin with her hands for hydration and a youthful bounce, then sealed everything with the Cream Supreme ($225). For a finishing touch, she applied the Iconic Eye Cream ($145) to smooth and prepare the under-eye area for flawless concealer application.

      “Jen and I collaborate seamlessly to create cohesive glamorous looks that convey the overall feeling of the narrative we are attempting to communicate through hair and makeup,” says Palmer-Smith. “I also truly enjoy working with Camila. I appreciate the ideas she brings to each event and shoot.”
