Spots, Sequins, and Spontaneity—The Small Joys That Influence My Daily Attire
Blanca Miró Scrimieri serves as an Editor in Residence for Who What Wear UK and is a stylist based in Barcelona. She is the founder of the fashion label La Veste and a co-founder of the sunglasses brand Delarge, showcasing her skills in design, creative direction, and brand development. While you may recognize Miró from her work with high-end fashion brands, it is likely her unique street style and outfit curations that have drawn you to her Instagram. When she isn't at fashion week or working behind the scenes at La Veste, she can also be found creating stylish tablescapes at @blanca_a_table.
In my latest column, I aimed to discuss something a bit more personal and different from the usual topics of trends or shopping. Recently, I’ve found myself noticing how much I cherish the little visual pleasures in daily life. This appreciation extends beyond fashion to interiors, objects, colors, restaurants, lamps, packaging, flowers, tables—you name it. These small details can significantly elevate the mood of any day.
There are particular items I simply cannot resist. Not out of necessity, practicality, or because they are deemed timeless, but rather because they are those small visual delights that make everyday life feel a bit more thrilling. Think of a pair of gingham ballerinas, a polka dot skirt, a silk coat adorned with flowers, a lamp reminiscent of candy, a necklace that feels more like a sweet wrapper than jewelry, or a red bow that serves no purpose other than to make me smile. As I grow older, I become increasingly aware of how much these small pleasures mean to me. People often wonder about my love for color or why I combine prints, textures, and unique accessories. The reality is these choices no longer feel like 'fashion decisions'; they are mood enhancers—tiny visual vitamins that help transform ordinary days into something special.
For years, minimalism has been touted as the pinnacle of sophistication—featuring neutral tones, understated luxury, and perfect restraint. While I can certainly appreciate a stunning beige room or an impeccably tailored camel coat, I have never desired to fully immerse myself in that aesthetic. I crave a bit of 'visual noise.' Not chaos or excess, but just enough surprise to make life vibrant. Perhaps this is why I am instinctively attracted to things that some may view as unnecessary. They evoke a sense of childhood joy; not in a nostalgic sense, but in the way children naturally gravitate toward objects that bring them happiness. They don’t ponder whether something is stylish enough; they simply engage with what delights them. Many adults lose this instinct, becoming practical, efficient, and sensible. We start selecting items based on logical criteria rather than joy. I admit I’ve never excelled in that regard, thankfully.
When I created the polka dot pieces for my collaboration with Maje, I wasn't focused on trends; I was centered on that immediate feeling of joy. It's the same thrill I experience when I discover vintage gingham fabric at a market or a vibrant lamp. There’s a remarkable power in objects that evoke instant emotional responses, especially when they are small.
This idea extends beyond clothing; it impacts the restaurants I adore, the books I collect, the tables I arrange, the flowers I purchase, and the areas of my home that bring me the most happiness. Looking around, I realize my environment is filled with these tiny visual delights.
Thus, this piece is perhaps less about fashion and more a small celebration of joy. It serves as a reminder that beauty doesn’t always have to be functional, that color can provide energy, and that surrounding oneself with little visual pleasures is far from frivolous. It’s simply a means to make daily life feel richer, warmer, and more vibrant.
