As Fashion Editors, we're tired of these 9 summer trends.
There are indeed trends that endure over time, but many of the trends this summer do not meet that everlasting standard. As fashion editors, it's our responsibility to stay updated on what is in and out for each season. With June’s warmth finally upon us, we've noticed several trends that have fallen out of favor, but rest assured, we've also highlighted what to wear instead. Although these trends can still be worn, we believe in the importance of choosing the right fashion path. The trends we are leaving behind had their moments in the spotlight, but they were short-lived. From jelly shoes to polka dots, here are the trends we are moving on from. Continue scrolling to see the nine trends we’re done with this summer, along with the alternatives we recommend.
Audry Hiaoui, Associate Shopping Editor: "Mini dresses will always be stylish, but this summer, I’m opting for other lengths, like knee-length and midi dresses. Especially with the heat in NYC, I’m looking for lightweight, breathable dresses made from natural fabrics. As for swimwear, I’m no longer interested in standard bikini bottoms and prefer options like swim shorts, skorts, or even dresses.”

Sierra Mayhew, Fashion Editor: "Jelly shoes have sparked debate in recent summers, and while I’ve eventually warmed up to them, I have one strong exception. The chunky fisherman platform styles that have been popular in the past couple of years will never make it onto my feet. They come off as too bulky and costume-like. What I adore are the feminine, delicate jelly sandals that feature subtle straps and a minimal look with that trademark glossy finish. For summer 2026, I’m completely smitten with these dainty styles."

Ana Escalante, Associate Features Editor: "While polka-dot tops and skirts might still linger in my closet thanks to last year’s whimsical print trend, this year I find myself drawn more to stripes. On my Instagram, I’m seeing striped bikinis, terry-fiber shorts with stripes, and streaked jeans gaining popularity among fashion enthusiasts. It might be a fleeting micro-trend, but it’s undeniably cute and a simple way to inject some color and fun into my summer style."

Allyson Payer, Senior Editor: "Bubble-hem miniskirts had their time, and I tried to embrace the trend, but I always felt somewhat silly wearing one and struggled to find suitable tops to match. The knee-length skirts inspired by the '90s that are trending right now suit my classic style much better."

Anna LaPlaca, Senior Fashion Editor: "In the summer, easy flat sandals are essential, but for 2026, I’m shifting away from slides and leaning towards flip-flops. I particularly love my A.Emery Kinto Sandals with their elevated leather finish and square-toe design—they complement white jeans or midi dresses far better than slides."

Nikki Chwatt, Associate Fashion Editor: "Barrel-leg jeans and trousers have had their time, but this summer, I’m setting them aside. Instead, I’m focusing on tailored pants, specifically slim bootcut jeans and capri trousers. Summer is an excellent opportunity for accessorizing, and my favorite method is through jewelry, especially fun necklaces. Rather than long necklaces with shell or tassel pendants—which feel overdone—I’ll enhance my outfits with short beaded necklaces. I’m especially interested in those featuring oversized beads and unique colored stones like tiger's eye or onyx."
