Not Sambas—In my opinion, this classic trainer trend consistently pairs well with jeans.

Having spent years in the fashion industry, I've gained insight into which trainer trends pair well with jeans—and which ones don’t. While some combinations seem effortless and stylish, others may appear lackluster, such as loose denim awkwardly resting over chunky trainers, which can lessen the appeal of both elements. Consequently, I've compiled a mental list of jean-and-trainer combinations that consistently work, and this week, Cara Delevingne showcased one of my all-time favorites.

Beginning with a streamlined denim base, Cara chose high-waisted straight-leg jeans. This fit is neither skin-tight nor excessively baggy; the slightly slouchy silhouette brought a relaxed vibe to her off-duty outfit. Had she opted for a typical pair of Sambas, the ensemble would have felt instantly associated with a specific fashion trend. Although Sambas are still quite popular, they've become so widespread that they now carry a timestamped nature. Additionally, their gum soles can add a certain bulkiness that doesn't look quite right when peeking out from under stovepipe jeans, in my view.

Instead, Cara selected a trainer style that I consider genuinely timeless. By replacing the Sambas with classic Converse, she anchored her look with a pair of black high-tops that complemented the relaxed shape of her jeans. The denim fell neatly over the slim profile of the trainers instead of gathering heavily at the ankle, resulting in a cleaner, more refined appearance. The dark black color also contributed depth and sophistication, elevating the overall look. Versatile, timeless, and stylish, these are the trainers I’m supporting for 2025.
