Count on Alexa Chung to make this "affordable" shoe trend appear remarkably luxurious.
As a fashion journalist who's seen countless styles, I'm seldom surprised by outfit selections. However, this morning, while browsing through images from last night's Serpentine Summer Party, I found myself genuinely astonished. It wasn’t an unusual haute couture piece that caught my eye, but rather my long-time style inspiration, Alexa Chung, donning a shoe trend I never expected her to adopt.
Beneath London's bright summer sun, Chung showcased a sculptural two-piece by local designer Dilara Findikoglu. This outfit, in a soft beige tone, featured a high neckline with partially open buttons that softened its otherwise Victorian-inspired form. Complemented by a matching knee-length skirt, the ensemble exuded elegance, sophistication, and was perfectly suited for the occasion. As for her choice of footwear, Chung opted for heels, but instead of the elegant slingbacks I anticipated, she chose a style I would have confidently claimed she’d never wear: PVC heels.
Possibly due to their long-held reputation for appearing somewhat "cheap," transparent heels were certainly not the first shoe trend I expected Chung to champion. Part of the stigma around this trend may come from the fact that PVC is generally less costly than leather or suede. However, this material does offer benefits. It’s durable and easy to clean with just a quick wipe, keeping the shoes looking new. Made from clear vinyl, these shoes appear nearly invisible on the feet, creating a streamlined look that elongates the legs and lets the outfit shine. Their minimalist design also gives the illusion of longer legs, making them an unexpectedly smart choice for event dressing.
The trend hasn't emerged overnight; designers have been exploring transparent footwear for a number of seasons. Valentino's PVC heels stirred discussions with their innovative design, making the sculptural heel look almost detached from the foot. Meanwhile, Alaïa's transparent styles have long been favorites among fashion enthusiasts.
If anyone can persuade me to reconsider a seemingly "cheap" shoe trend, it’s Alexa Chung. Continue reading to explore my selection of the best Alexa-inspired PVC heels below.
