If you keep up with the latest jewelry styles, you likely have been familiar with—and fond of—Catbird for quite some time. As a go-to brand for over a decade, Catbird has set the standard for fine jewelry with its minimalist and timeless designs. Leading the creative vision of the brand is Chief Creative Officer Leigh Batnick Plessner. However, before she took the reins at one of the most cherished jewelry brands, her career path was quite different.

After graduating from Georgetown University with degrees in English literature and anthropology, Plessner worked in various service positions in Washington, D.C., including local coffee shops and as a cocktail waitress. Her pivotal moment came when she joined the esteemed independent bookstore Politics and Prose, starting in the children’s section. Her exceptional curation skills quickly led to her promotion to sidelines buyer, where she selected all non-book merchandise for the store. This experience introduced her to stationery and gifts, motivating her to attend several trade shows.

Plessner then launched her own stationery line, Jezebel, and moved to New York City to pursue this venture. In 2005, she met Rony Vardi, the founder of Catbird, at a stationery trade show, and the two hit it off. She soon began working at Catbird’s storefront in New York. As the brand grew, Plessner gradually stepped away from Jezebel to fully commit to the jewelry company.

As Catbird thrived, she evolved into her role as chief creative officer. In this capacity, Plessner manages Catbird’s overall visual identity, influencing everything from product display to marketing design. Her creative direction has fostered high-profile collaborations with renowned artists and musicians like Clairo and Phoebe Bridgers, establishing Catbird’s reputation for meaningful, trendy partnerships that connect with a contemporary, artistic audience.

Tune into the latest episode of Second Life to learn how Plessner continues to shape Catbird's unique allure in the competitive landscape of fine jewelry. And keep scrolling to browse our favorite pieces from the brand.
