I've tried numerous foundations, but I consistently return to this Chanel one.
(Image credit: @kaitlyn_mclintock) Throughout my career as a beauty editor, I've tested hundreds of foundations (and even more prior to that). During this time, I've categorized my favorite formulas into two groups: 1) foundations that provide a natural appearance, and 2) those that effectively cover my rosacea. There are only a few that excel in both aspects—they appear seamless on my skin while concealing imperfections and uneven redness.
The brand and price are irrelevant to my top choices; it ultimately depends on performance. I require my foundation to be lightweight, flawless, long-lasting, adaptable, and breathable, among other qualities. Among the vast array of formulas I've tried, there's only one that fulfills every requirement. I regard it as my all-time favorite foundation. I've worn it to family weddings, during professional photoshoots, and most recently, to a bridal shower on a sweltering 90° day. It’s top-notch and I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone who will listen.

N°1 De Chanel Revitalizing Foundation
Here it is—Chanel's N°1 De Chanel Revitalizing Foundation. This formula is so remarkable that I usually keep two (sometimes three) bottles in my collection. I know I will use it, and truthfully, I worry it might be discontinued someday. Not being ready to face that possibility, having duplicates provides me with some reassurance. Read on to understand why I am so enamored with this foundation and what distinguishes it from the vast array I've tried.
I snapped this picture after wearing the Chanel foundation for about six hours while attending a bridal shower in 90-degree heat. (Image credit: @kaitlyn_mclintock) A few features make this foundation exceptional: its versatility, texture, and longevity. Let's first discuss its versatility. Unlike other foundations that fall into light, medium, or full coverage categories, this one is adjustable. It can be easily sheered out (just apply a few drops with a soft-bristled brush), built up (just smooth it over with your fingers), or maintained at a medium level (I use my trusty Beautyblender for medium coverage). This is one reason why I recommend it to so many; I recognize it accommodates different coverage preferences.
Next, let’s consider its texture and staying power. Formulated with red camellia oil and other hydrating ingredients, Chanel's N°1 De Chanel Revitalizing Foundation feels incredibly light and moisturizing. It’s so airy that I sometimes forget I have foundation on. Its hydrating properties leave my dry skin looking smooth and plump—not cakey or powdery. The red camellia oil adds a satin finish and, as a bonus, shields the skin from environmental stressors.
In my experience, most lightweight and hydrating foundations tend to lack durability. They often slide and smudge off my skin, particularly in hot and humid conditions. However, this foundation strikes a rare balance, maintaining my skin's hydration while staying intact throughout the day. This is one reason I consistently wear it for significant events; I can trust it will look just as good by the end of the night as it did when I first applied it. Most recently, I wore it for a six-hour bridal shower in 90° weather. I was confident it would perform well, and it did.
Here’s one of my cherished (and frequently used) bottles of Chanel's N°1 De Chanel Revitalizing Foundation. (Image credit: @kaitlyn_mclintock) I do have one word of caution. Due to its radiant finish and hydrating formula, it might not be ideal for oily or blemish-prone skin. (In such cases, I'd likely opt for a velvety matte foundation.) However, if you have normal, dry, sensitive, or mature skin, I highly recommend it. While it may seem like a splurge at over $80 a bottle, in my opinion, the "You have great skin" compliments are well worth it.
