The Lower East Side Brand That Fashionable New Yorkers Are Sporting This Summer

      It’s part of my job to recognize trends, even in more niche areas. I’ve reached a point where I constantly identify people’s outfits on the street: “Those are Levi's 501 '90s ankle length” or “That skirt is from Cou Cou.” A standout moment was when I asked a server if her nail polish was Essie's Clam Bake one summer, and she responded with a surprised, "Yes, how did you know?" More recently, I’ve been noticing personalized canvas tote bags and colorful leather ballet flats from Alex Mill popping up throughout New York City. Upon investigation, I discovered that the brand began in the Lower East Side in 2012 with the mission of creating the perfect shirt. I learned about its background: the founder, Alex Drexler, is the son of Millard “Mickey” Drexler, who established Old Navy and Madewell and was also CEO of Gap and J.Crew. In addition to spotting it in Manhattan and Brooklyn, I've also seen it online, styled by Courtney Grow, Julia Mervis, and our editor in chief Kat Collings. I even came across a TikTok dubbing it "Alex Mill summer." Currently, I'm eyeing The Perfect Weekday Tote and the Prince Street Ballet Flat for my summer wishlist.
