It's widely acknowledged that summer is perhaps the most challenging season for dressing. The rising temperatures can make it difficult to maintain a chic look, as fewer layers often lead to outfits that feel monotonous. That's why the most fashionable women are not solely relying on clothing this summer; they are utilizing accessories to enhance their style. One accessory that can immediately elevate an outfit while also protecting your skin from sun exposure is the hat.
Often overlooked, a hat can instantly enhance or tone down an outfit. A casual cap or canvas bucket hat can make a dressy ensemble more relaxed, while a pillbox hat or structured raffia hat can add sophistication. It completes an outfit, helps shield against the sun, and protects your skin all at once. It's hard to find another accessory that is as functional.
I've explored various options and looked through the feeds of the most stylish figures on Substack, and here are my top selections for summer hats that It girls are sporting this season.
1. The Canvas Bucket Hat:
If I had to choose a standout hat for the season, it would undoubtedly be the TWP Nantucket Sound Hat, which is a favorite among fashion enthusiasts. It's frequently seen across the fashion segment on Substack, with a persistent sold-out status. The red chin strap adds a charming detail that gives this otherwise casual bucket hat a bit more character, transitioning it from sporty athleisure to effortlessly chic.
If it's sold out or you prefer a lower price point, I purchased this canvas bucket hat from Lack of Color in two shades—it's that impressive.
For those hesitant to embrace color, a hat is a simple way to experiment. It introduces an interesting element to a neutral ensemble without being overpowering and can soften a structured or business look.
Hat Attack’s reversible canvas sunhat is another favorite, as it can be worn with either the black or white side out depending on your outfit.
2. The Structured Bucket Hat:
A structured bucket hat has the ability to elevate even a simple tee and relaxed trousers, making them appear meticulously curated. It lends a complete and polished look.
The Zimmerman raffia bucket hat adds structure, texture, and a hint of romance. The sculptural shape paired with natural raffia offers a balanced design that feels refined yet casual.
This style has a practical aspect as well. Unlike softer hats that can lose their shape after just one trip in your suitcase, a structured hat retains its form beautifully. If you've ever struggled to reshape a floppy hat on vacation, you’ll appreciate the difference!
Lorna Murray's pleated Capri hat has been a popular choice in Australia this past summer.
3. The Floppy Bucket Hat:
If the structured bucket hat is suited for urban environments, the floppy bucket hat is perfect for vacations. Its laid-back nature allows you to toss it into your beach bag, pack it into your suitcase, and not worry about keeping it pristine throughout your trip. It's my go-to when I plan on wearing linen, swimwear, and little else.
My By Malene Birger hat has accompanied me on every summer getaway for the past few years. I love the two-tone contrast that adds an interesting twist compared to a standard raffia hat. I can wear it casually for a "mysterious woman on holiday" vibe or fold the front back for easy monitoring of my kids at the beach. Although mine is from last season, By Malene Birger has released two new two-tone options this summer; I currently have the black version with a natural brim in my cart.
Barbour’s Annie crochet bucket hat is quite similar, as is COS’s contrast-trim raffia hat, another excellent two-tone floppy option.
4. The "Just for Fun" Hat:
While these hats may not offer much in terms of sun protection, they definitely add flair to your outfit and inject some joy. The space atop your head is prime real estate, so why not use it? Hats are a simple way to introduce color, texture, fun, or a bit of whimsy to an outfit.
These hats are also my go-to for managing third-day hair. With a little dry shampoo and one of these, I can look put-together even when my hair feels less than fresh.
ZARA's sailor hat is perfect for this purpose. While it offers minimal shading for your face, its playful design makes it worthwhile. Sometimes, that's all an outfit needs.
