Much like its denim, the brand's scents were both timeless and notably minimalist, with everyone stylish having their preferred "silhouette." You were either a fan of Heaven (the brand's best seller from 1994 until Dream launched in '95), a devoted follower of the earthy Grass, an avant-garde Om enthusiast, and so on. Each fragrance brought forth its own emotional journey, allowing you to embody a character with every spritz. The line was discontinued in the early 2000s, and the absence is still felt by many. "I still have a bottle I bought 10 years ago," one Reddit user mentioned regarding Dream, while another expressed missing Grass after landscaping on a rainy day. "I wish I could capture that smell," they lamented. These fans, along with many others sharing similar feelings, will be excited to hear that the brand has been quietly reviving these understated classics. Millennials, rejoice: Gap Beauty is back!

      This might not be surprising, but the fragrance industry has transformed significantly over the last 30 years. While each scent remains faithful to its original essence, perfumers Honorine Blanc (who was part of the original Gap collection!) and Nicole Mancini have incorporated contemporary ingredients and techniques to resonate with today’s fragrance enthusiasts. According to Blanc, during an exclusive brand preview last June, today’s fragrance lovers possess much more industry insight. Their tastes have broadened since the '90s, allowing her and Mancini greater creative freedom in the revamped collection. Modern fragrance aficionados are also open to experimentation. You may have identified with Dream or Grass back in the '90s, but now, you might feel drawn to mix various fragrances (Heaven and Dream blend nicely) for a personalized scent adventure, similar to curating a capsule wardrobe full of classic pieces that you can combine any way you like. The new collection launches on July 30, but if you're curious about which bottle to choose, keep reading. I’ve tested the entire collection ahead of its launch, so here’s what you need to know regarding the scents, sillage, and how each compares to the originals.

      To many, Dream is the most nostalgic of the collection. Fresh and clean yet alluring, this scent became widely recognized as Gap’s signature. Updating such a cherished classic is no simple task, which is why Blanc preserved the essence of the fragrance—its freesia core—while introducing new, intricate florals like orange flower absolute and neroli essential oil. "One is an extraction, and the other one is a distillation," she explains during a brand presentation. "Neroli is very fresh, citrusy, and vibrant; while the orange flower adds depth." She also decided to incorporate more woody notes, particularly cedarwood, to enhance the sillage. "Strength is essential today; consumers seek something that lasts," she emphasizes. Nonetheless, the overall effect is still very clean and skin-like without being overly soapy. It’s the crisp white T-shirt of fragrances.

      While Dream is certainly iconic, Gap Grass might just be the most well-known. Whether you love it or dislike it, you can’t deny the immediate earthy "fresh-cut grass" scent upon first sniff. For the 2026 version, Mancini aimed to retain that natural feel but wanted to introduce more complexity through various green notes—green mandarin, reminding her of sun-warmed skin; violet leaf, which brings a "touch of cucumber wetness"; vetiver for grounding; and matcha tea through DSM-Firmenich's proprietary Smell-the-Taste technology. "We collaborate with flavorists to create accords that they use in culinary contexts for perfumery. That wasn’t available 30 years ago," she explains. I’d argue Grass is the most significant shift from the original. While it unmistakably carries its green essence, the updated version enhances freshness instead of leaning heavily on that earthy quality. "I sought something meditative, calming, and that truly evokes well-being," shares Mancini.

      Fans of the original Heaven scent likely recall its musky, aldehydic fragrance. A top seller for the brand, it featured a plethora of crisp florals that, according to Mancini, now feel a tad outdated for 2026. However, she loved its comforting musks and opted to amplify them for this version, crafting a softer, more sensual blend to evoke feelings of bliss and comfort. "We have new musks now, 30 years later, that provide excellent structure and longevity," she notes. She
