The Journey of the Kemo Sabe Hat to Becoming Fashion's Iconic Must-Have Item
Nowadays, luxury is not defined by logos but is found in the subtle assurance of craftsmanship, authenticity, and items that grow more personal with each use. Few brands exemplify this change as well as Kemo Sabe. Starting as a small Western outfitting store in Aspen, it has transformed into one of the most sought-after fashion destinations, appealing to a diverse clientele from ranchers to Hollywood celebrities for custom hats, heirloom buckles, and boots built to endure. For Wendy Kunkle, the president and owner of Kemo Sabe, the brand's allure has never stemmed from nostalgia but rather from conveying the romance of the American West in a contemporary luxury context—where a cowboy hat fits seamlessly on Madison Avenue as much as it does on a Texas ranch. "Western style isn't a costume," she asserts. "It's timeless." As the nation marks its 250th anniversary, Kunkle believes that the future of American style will focus more on authenticity, individuality, and craftsmanship rather than fleeting trends. In this conversation, she shares her thoughts on the enduring appeal of Western fashion, the significance of customization as the pinnacle of luxury, and why the best hat is simply the one you never want to take off.
Kemo Sabe has come to symbolize modern Western luxury. How has the vision changed?
When Kemo Sabe opened its doors in 1990, the initial goal was quite straightforward: to survive. Gradually, the founders realized they were creating something far beyond retail. They established a destination focused on Western style and, crucially, a remarkable experience. The guiding principle was always to "Make the customer feel important," and this principle became the cornerstone of the brand. When my brother, Bobby Kunkle, our longtime friend Andrew Wilson, and I took over Kemo Sabe in 2020, we aimed to honor that legacy while enhancing it. Western style is not a costume—it’s timeless. We design beautifully crafted items that can be worn anywhere in the world, whether in Aspen, New York, or Paris.
What differentiates an exceptional cowboy hat from a good one?
The best hat is the one you want to wear. What truly sets a hat apart is finding the ideal match for the individual. It’s about proportion. Is the crown the correct height? Is the brim the appropriate width? The ideal hat should feel like a natural extension of your personality. Our sales associates undergo extensive training because fitting someone for a hat combines craftsmanship, styling, and active listening. Creating a bespoke hat usually takes around 45 minutes, and every moment is crucial.
How do you strike a balance between Western heritage and contemporary fashion?
Finding a balance between tradition and modern fashion isn't about reinventing the West; it's about enhancing it. We respect the craftsmanship and authenticity behind each item while creating products that blend seamlessly into the urban landscapes of Manhattan and Paris as easily as they do into the rugged beauty of Aspen or a Texas ranch.
Why does Western style continue to resonate beyond the American West?
Cowboy gear has an undeniable allure. A great cowboy hat exudes confidence. Donning a stylish cowboy hat can shift the atmosphere—people notice you, smile, and engage in conversations. There’s something about wearing a hat that enhances your confidence. Moreover, I believe recent years have influenced people’s perception of the West—there’s a longing for open spaces, freedom, and a more leisurely way of life. That embodies the romantic essence of Western style.
Kemo Sabe has long attracted celebrities. Did that alter the business?
We never pursued celebrity attention. They gravitated toward us because they genuinely appreciated the brand and the experience. If anything, the increasing presence of celebrities reaffirmed our belief: when you produce exceptional products and memorable experiences, people naturally want to be involved.
Luxury is now increasingly defined by experience instead of logos. Was Kemo Sabe ahead of this shift?
For us, luxury has always revolved around craftsmanship and experience. Thirty years ago, offering customers a drink while shopping was quite rare. Many thought we were foolish for branding hats for free or providing feathers for personalization. But we knew those moments held significance.
Why has personalization become such a vital aspect of luxury?
People desire ownership of something that feels distinctively theirs. In a world filled with mass production or instant replication, there’s something profoundly meaningful about crafting an item that is uniquely theirs. Long before customization became a trendy luxury, our customers were already designing their own hats, boots, belts, and buckles. Each item carries a story because it is created with the individual in mind.
Is there a custom piece you’ll always remember?
The pieces that linger in my mind are those imbued with a deeply personal narrative. Sometimes, a customer presents an old photo of a grandfather with his cherished hat, and we strive to recreate it as accurately as possible. Other times, a wife commissions a custom buckle for her husband featuring their children's initials on the front and a heartfelt message discreetly
