Sheer, Slinky, and Almost Invisible—Copenhagen's Most Stylish Runway Trend Is Making Its Way to Bridal Fashion.

Sheer, Slinky, and Almost Invisible—Copenhagen's Most Stylish Runway Trend Is Making Its Way to Bridal Fashion.

Copenhagen Fashion Week for spring/summer 2027 has recently concluded, and there’s one dress trend that has lingered in my mind since departing the Danish capital: sheer, slinky, barely-there dresses. Throughout the runways, designers showcased body-hugging silhouettes and ultra-thin fabrics in soft hues like ivory, blush, and nude, evoking a romantic, slightly undone, and undeniably sexy feel. With my own wedding approaching, I immediately began thinking about brides.

Wedding attire has relaxed significantly in recent years, particularly after the ceremony. While the main gown often serves as the centerpiece for drama with corsets, structure, and voluminous fabric, the second look has evolved into a fun, slightly cheeky counterpart. This look tends to be shorter, sleeker, and much more conducive to dancing, increasingly showcasing sexiness.

At By Malene Birger, which returned to Copenhagen Fashion Week this season, the sensuality was paired with the label's hallmark understated sophistication. Imagine fluid fabrics, elongated shapes, and dresses that glide over the body instead of sculpting it. A notable piece was a metallic slip dress in a blush shade, serving as a clever nod to the sheer dress worn by Kate Moss at a London party in 1993.

Of course, sheer fashion isn't new. For several seasons, designers have played with transparency in various forms, from translucent skirts worn over briefs to lace dresses and the now-common sheer dress. However, Copenhagen presented something slightly different. There was a reduction in shock value and overt nudity. Soft blush tones, creamy whites, and skin-like nudes rendered even the most revealing outfits delicate rather than bold, leaning more towards romance than red-carpet glamor.

This notion manifested in various ways across different designers. Baum und Pferdgarten combined transparency with floral details for a flirty look, while Freya Dalsjø embraced a more avant-garde approach with a deep-U-neck satin gown. OpéraSport experimented with flowing lace-trimmed dresses, and The Garment interpreted the trend through two-piece designs. Collina Strada, a New York-based label showing as an international guest, featured sequined bias-cut gowns complemented by intricate diamond accessories and floral touches. While these ensembles weren’t specifically designed for weddings, that’s precisely the point. Sometimes, the most alluring dress at a wedding isn’t a traditional wedding gown at all.

Style insiders have long recognized that the most enchanting wedding dresses don’t always come from bridal boutiques. The most captivating looks I’ve encountered recently have stemmed from ready-to-wear collections, as brides explore non-traditional labels for rehearsal dinners, welcome gatherings, receptions, and various other events. In this way, the spring/summer 2027 runways in Copenhagen feel particularly well-timed. A sheer ivory column dress or nearly invisible slip might not be intended specifically for brides, but with satin heels, a veil, and perhaps a martini after midnight, the idea becomes quite appealing.

Traditional ball gowns and mantilla veils are not vanishing anytime soon and shouldn’t. However, once the reception concludes and the after-party kicks off, brides may be keen to shed a few layers. Although Copenhagen's sheer dresses may not have been designed for the aisle, by 2027, don’t be surprised to see them on many dance floors.
