Dr. Jill Biden is truly an influential figure. She is an educator, author of *View From the East Wing*, and the former First Lady of the United States. However, long before she took on national roles as Second Lady and later First Lady, Dr. Biden committed her career to teaching and education. She began as a high school English teacher. In 1977, she married then-Senator Joe Biden, and from the beginning of their marriage, she was determined to pursue her teaching career while raising their children. Balancing family life with her teaching responsibilities remained a key focus for her. Meanwhile, she continued her own education with steadfast determination, earning two master's degrees—one in education and the other in English. As her husband aimed for the presidential nomination, Dr. Biden found her professional calling teaching community college students, where she engaged with a diverse array of learners while staying connected to the work she cherished. During this time, she also completed her doctorate in education at the University of Delaware, marking an important milestone in her educational journey and further equipping her for the dual roles she would later juggle. In 2009, she became Second Lady when her husband was elected vice president of the United States under President Barack Obama. As Second Lady, she spearheaded the Joining Forces initiative alongside former First Lady Michelle Obama, which aimed to support military families, and Dr. Biden remained committed to her identity as an educator. Throughout her time as Second Lady, she kept her role as an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College, unwilling to step away from the classroom that had been a significant part of her life. When she became First Lady in 2021, she chose to continue teaching, making her the first First Lady to hold a job outside the White House. This decision highlighted a consistent theme throughout her public and private life: a strong commitment to education, both as a learner and as a teacher. Tune into the latest episode of Second Life to discover how Dr. Biden continues to uphold her belief that teaching and learning are vital in everything she undertakes.
