Hold the Fluffy, Volumizing Mascara—This Micro Wand Somehow Enhances the Fullness of Your Lashes Even More.
The consensus among beauty enthusiasts is that fuller and denser mascara wands yield better volume. This notion makes practical sense because larger brush fibers can hold more product, resulting in greater pigment application to the lashes. However, the beauty community seems to have become convinced that a larger wand is always superior, even though achieving thick, fluttery, and clump-free lashes can be more nuanced. As makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes points out in an Instagram video introducing her new Microscara—a volumizing and lengthening tubing mascara equipped with a precision micro wand—"sometimes, smaller is better." I can attest that it’s the smallest brush I’ve ever used, and it’s undoubtedly among the best. Be sure to grab yours soon before it sells out—trust me, it’s going to go quickly.
For reference, here's how it compares in size to a pen. The mascara features a smudge-proof tubing formula enriched with castor oil and shea butter to condition the lashes while allowing for a comfortable and flexible application. I recommend it for its smooth pigmentation; while I generally don’t wear black mascara, this one is buildable enough to look natural on my light lashes without being too dramatic, yet it's easy to layer for a bolder look. The standout feature is the small wand, which enables me to coat each lash—including the short, stubborn hairs in the inner corners. Hughes elaborates in her video that "the tiny wand allows for better access to the lash root, darkening it more quickly and adding drama, dimension, and definition." These subtle adjustments make a significant difference in achieving fluffy volume. My lashes not only appear fuller, but my eyes also look wider and more alert.
Hughes certainly excels in minimalistic makeup techniques, so it’s no surprise she has a method for thicker lashes that doesn’t rely on excessive product. She taught me to prime my foundation brush on the back of my hand for better coverage with less product, and her Microscara employs a similar principle: instead of depending on thick bristles that risk clumping, you can apply pigment precisely near the root. This technique results in a much more natural look, and because the pigment is highly buildable, you can apply multiple layers without losing definition.
It’s worth noting that the tiny wand also makes bottom mascara application incredibly easy. Just sweep it back and forth along the base of your lower lashes, and you'll achieve perfect definition without any smudging.
Since receiving an early sample, Hughes’s Microscara has become an essential in my makeup routine—even though I'm known to skip mascara altogether! The petite wand gives me a sense of control, whether I'm going for a natural look or creating a more dramatic appearance for a photo-ready event. I just wish it was available in brown (my preferred shade); however, Hughes mentioned that a rich chocolate color is expected to be available soon. As much as I love the deep black shade, I can only imagine how much I’ll adore the next micro version.
