I Still Want to Achieve a Sun-Kissed Glow in Autumn—These Tanning Mists Are the Solution.
Those of you who are familiar with me know that during the summer months, I enjoy applying some fake tan. What can I say? I appreciate a sun-kissed and glowing look, especially when the weather is warm. However, this autumn, I'm committed to maintaining that sun-kissed glow, even if the grey skies are not in my favor. With that in mind, I'm looking to move away from the heavier tanning mousses towards something more lightweight and natural-looking, and thankfully, I've discovered just the solution: tanning mists.
We all understand that achieving fake tan is not completely effortless, but tanning mists are one of the quickest and simplest methods for achieving a sun-kissed look (along with my gradual tanning lotions, of course). I've tested some of the top tanning mists available and even sought advice from an expert for their best tanning tips, so keep reading to learn more.
What Is a Tanning Mist? "Tanning mists make it easy: just mist, go, and allow the glow to develop," explains James Read, tanning expert and creator of Self Glow by James Read. "They are fast, even, and entirely hands-free, making them ideal for busy tanners or those new to tanning." But how do they differ from standard mousse formulas? "The main difference is that mists allow you to spray and go — no hands, no tanning mitt, and no blending," Read clarifies. "Mousses, on the other hand, require more application and preparation."
How to Apply a Tanning Mist It is always advisable to follow the product's instructions, but Read offers some excellent tips for achieving an even glow. "Hold the mist about 15cm from the skin and spray across the front of your face, then each side, followed by the front and back of your neck," he says. "For a more realistic finish, I also use the tanning mist on my hands." If you're using a mist on your body, I suggest preparing your skin in the usual manner by exfoliating and moisturizing any dry areas like elbows or knees.

Bali Body
Self Tan Body Mist
This body mist is fantastic to use, and I reach for it in both summer and autumn. It utilizes micro mist technology, making application incredibly easy and ensuring the product is evenly distributed, so you don’t have to worry about streaks. In the evening, after exfoliating with a body scrub and preparing my skin, I simply spray it on and blend it with a brush or mitt, waking up with a natural sun-kissed glow. One thing to keep in mind is that the mist is completely clear, meaning there is no guide color. I recommend starting with a small amount and building up the color according to your preferred finish.
Pros: Quick and easy to apply; one layer gives a natural sun-kissed glow.

Face Tan Aqua Mist
Our beauty director, Shannon Lawlor, loves this face tanning mist from Three Warriors. Crafted to achieve a radiant and glowing complexion, the fine spray is enriched with skin-nourishing ingredients like rose oil and aloe vera. It develops in as little as three hours and doesn't require rinsing. Lawlor's top tip? Blend the product with a brush immediately after application for a smooth and even finish.
Pros: Contains skin-nourishing ingredients for a glowing complexion. Cons: Best when blended with a brush.

Sunblush Hydrating Tan Mist
James Read's tanning products are impressively innovative, and this mist is no exception. I've used countless bottles of this due to the hydrating, skincare-infused formula. The lightweight mist provides a golden glow and includes rosewater, hyaluronic acid, and plant-based DHA. It's the kind of product that will truly make people think you just returned from a relaxing week in the sun. Newer from the brand is the Golden Days Milky Tan Toner (£39), a milky mist toner-tan hybrid that hydrates and calms the skin. I can definitely see myself trying this out during the autumn months when my skin becomes a bit dry and irritated.
Pros: Hydrating formula; lightweight mist. Cons: Has a subtle scent
