Upon examining the tastemakers shaping future fashion trends, it became evident that feathered, flippy whisper fringe is poised to become the next significant hair trend, and celebrity hairstylists seem to agree.

      What is a whisper fringe?

      Simply put, whisper fringe refers to the piecey curtain bangs we've seen on celebrities recently—longer styles that can be swept away from the face, like those of Miley Cyrus and Zoë Kravitz, or the bold Gen Z side bangs seen on Bella Hadid and Mika Abdalla. "I consider this the noncommittal bang," remarks celebrity hairstylist and brand founder Benjamin Mohapi in an interview with Who What Wear. "It's incredibly versatile. You can sort of have it but also kind of not. It’s ideal in a world where constant reinvention is standard and attention spans are brief." Whether styled as feathery curtain bangs or choppy side bangs, these face-framing pieces enable you to reinvent your fringe daily—a necessity for those in fashion who wish to stay ahead of trends.

      "I feel like 2026 has really been the year of the curtain fringe," notes celebrity hairstylist Marylle Koken. While she believes this trend will remain popular for some time, she observes that clients are leaning towards a lighter interpretation rather than the thick shears reminiscent of Dakota Johnson. "This autumn, we’ll see clients becoming bolder. The fringe is evolving to be softer, more personalized, and truly customized to each individual's face shape and natural texture," she explains. "What I see behind the chair is that clients no longer request one specific trend; they desire a haircut that caters to them." Forget fixed trends; real clients seek high-functioning versatility that aligns with their daily lives, necessitating a low-maintenance style that matches their preferences. "It’s less about achieving a perfect blowout and more about cultivating a beautiful shape that accentuates how hair naturally flows," Koken continues. "That’s where I believe fringe is headed this autumn: more tailored, more effortless, and designed to work with the individual rather than against them."

      Soft Swoops and Side Bangs

      While millennials may treat whisper fringe as curtain bangs, Gen Z is taking it a notch higher by sweeping their wispy bangs to one side, nodding to early 2000s styles. (Millennials aren’t quite ready to embrace that yet.) "I believe the side-sweeping style is long overdue," reflects Mohapi. "Experimenting with bangs, no matter how subtle, is a fantastic way to reshape the face." They can be as fine as Kravitz's romantic strands while still making a bold statement. For those seeking a more voluminous appearance, Abdalla's style is a perfect reference. The Off Campus star sported thick curtain bangs swept and pinned to the side in a chic, messy updo crafted by celebrity hair and makeup artist Ruby Neves, and I quickly added that to my autumn hair inspiration board. Mohapi supports the rise of voluminous bangs.

      "As soon as bangs become the focal point, you can start flipping the top over for added volume without altering the overall style," explains Mohapi. Techniques like round brushing in the opposite direction for extra lift or pinning as needed, like Abdalla, can make a difference. "Once autumn sets in, more side-sweeping and flipping will emerge, but bangs will continue to be incorporated into the look," he adds. Koken believes there are simpler, more personal reasons behind this trend: People yearn for styling options that save them time in the morning. "Some are growing out a heavier fringe and naturally shifting to something softer, while others desire the flexibility of having a fringe without fully committing to blunt bangs," she observes. "The thinner, piecey fringe offers choices. You can wear it center-parted, swept to the side, or tucked away, depending on your mood." In essence, individuals seek styles that allow for easy adaptations rather than high-maintenance cuts requiring daily blow-drying, rollers, and hairspray.
