These Once-Popular Fall Trends No Longer Seem New for 2026

      Fall fashion trends have a knack for lingering longer than necessary. Last autumn, utility vests, micro bags, and puff sleeves were still present on many NYC street corners, but as we approach fall 2026, I'm observing a change. This year, I’m implementing a strict approach to my wardrobe. Instead of allowing quirky details and trendy silhouettes to creep into my closet once more, I’m focusing on items that are made to last through multiple seasons. Picture sporty jackets instead of utility vests, slouchy clutches rather than micro bags, and cummerbund belts in place of skullcaps. It’s clear that I have a significant closet cleanout ahead of me.

      If your closet still holds onto last year's top trends, don't fret. I’m not dismissing the items I mentioned entirely. If you truly enjoy them, wear them as much as you like. There’s no need to replace everything at once. As a fashion editor with strong opinions, however, I do have some thoughts to share. A modern peplum top fits the bill perfectly; it offers a more structured, mature take on the silhouette compared to the ruffled version from a decade ago, making even the simplest jeans-and-top outfit appear complete.
