Why are all the It girls sporting these geeky glasses? And what makes them flattering on everyone?

      During my sixth grade year, I realized that the writing on the chalkboard at the front of my classroom appeared somewhat blurry. Instead of informing my parents, I chose to simply squint my eyes. The idea of needing glasses seemed overwhelming, so I figured it was easier to struggle with reading what my teacher was trying to convey. A few weeks later, during a doctor's appointment, the vision chart exposed my condition: I was nearsighted and required glasses almost immediately. I cried so much that my parents offered me the option of contact lenses instead, and I've been wearing them for as long as I can remember.

      Over the years, my insecurity about glasses diminished when I understood that they didn’t signify being uncool. However, I preferred not to wear mine outside my apartment until I attended the F/W 23 Miu Miu show.

      Mrs. Prada has a remarkable ability to make me—and clearly others—view things differently than expected. On her runway, glasses transformed from a necessity to something desirable. Models sported them with sheer polka-dot dresses, cardigans, high-waisted hot pants, stockings, and minimal pieces. They also wore them with oversized hoodies styled as dresses and large beige blazers. What was once a nerdy staple now appeared subversive, paired with “bookish” items in a way that felt sexy. I developed a longing for these glasses that I had never experienced for spectacles before.

      Just days after they hit the market, the oval tortoise glasses went viral. It seemed that everywhere I went in New York, I saw girls wearing them. While Miu Miu runway items often catch on, it was intriguing to see a pair of glasses gain popularity instead of a bag or a shoe. Of course, there were plenty of those, too, but none seemed as ubiquitous as the glasses. Surprisingly, everyone looked good in them.

      It had been a while since I purchased a new pair of glasses, so I finally decided to buy the oval Miu Miu pair with prescription lenses. Although I’m captivated by trendy items, I generally shy away from the hype because I prefer wearing things that are less common, which is why much of my wardrobe is secondhand or vintage. Sometimes, the allure of an item diminishes when it becomes too familiar. Still, the more I saw these Miu Miu glasses, the more I yearned for them. Their effect on me was unique.

      Perhaps they represented more than just a fashionable accessory. They were altering the perception of glasses that many of us held since childhood. Mrs. Prada often describes Miu Miu as Prada’s little sister, but I believe Miu Miu resonates with many because it evokes memories of our younger selves—the little girl inside all of us who fantasized about what she would don as an adult. Instead of having to transition into "big-girl" attire, she can simply wear everything she always adored and embrace a few things she no longer fears. Wearing Miu Miu embodies the confidence one has always wished for, allowing one to become the girl they've always been.

      The glasses make me feel amazing. I typically prefer to step outside with a bit of makeup, but putting these on makes my bare face look adorable. They've also become the simplest way to complement an outfit that feels incomplete. They add a bookish lightness to a look that seems vibrant. I can't help but think that if these had existed when I was 10, I wouldn’t have cried over my glasses prescription. Instead, I would have been jumping for joy, thrilled to have an excuse to wear Miu Miu.
