With spring's official start just a day away, Kristen Nichols, Who What Wear's Associate Director of Special Projects, shares the trends from the spring runways that you can start incorporating into your wardrobe as you finally store away your winter coats.

One notable trend Nichols observed is the resurgence of fashion nostalgia from the 1960s. "I recently wrote an article about how the downtown crowd in New York has started dressing a bit like Audrey Hepburn, complete with pillbox hats and gloves," Nichols mentioned. In the latest episode of The Who What Wear Podcast, Nichols discusses her predictions for spring 2025 trends, the enduring appeal of florals, and more insights.       Did you make any predictions this season that are starting to materialize in the market? It's always intriguing to see what appears on the runway six months in advance and how it translates into actual street style. I believe some of our predictions have proven true, particularly the nostalgic trend centered around the 1960s. I've noticed that even the most fashion-forward New Yorkers are drawing inspiration from that era, embracing Audrey Hepburn style with pillbox hats and gloves.

The trend you associate with the most stylish and progressive dressers is drawing from this nostalgic fashion, which I find quite exciting. Additionally, there's a fascinating revival of more romantic styles. This trend feels very sweet and pretty, yet has not been considered "cool" in a while. We're observing a significant comeback of pastels, especially the powder pink shade we've discussed, but generally, pastels are making a strong return, which is intriguing given the long-standing focus on minimalism and neutral tones. Even as someone who typically wears neutrals, I find it refreshing to see a splash of color.

We previously mentioned bag charms, and we're still seeing them around. Sculptural belts, pendant necklaces, and tassels are now ubiquitous. People are enhancing simple outfits with little details to make them pop, which I really appreciate.

Let's dig into the '60s nostalgia trend and that sophisticated style you mentioned, including pillbox hats, tights, gloves, and skirt suits. Where can people shop to achieve this look? A skirt suit is a straightforward way to lean into this trend. A great option is currently available from Aritzia, featuring a sculptural peplum blazer. For a timeless investment piece you can have for years, look no further than the Dior 'Bar' jacket. Whether you opt for new or vintage, it established the iconic new look in the '50s. Those options cover a wide budget range.

Another item I'm quite enthusiastic about is the car coat. I wore one last season for street style at Fashion Week, and I've loved it ever since. It's a classic piece that embodies the '60s vibe while also feeling modern. The one I wore was from a New York brand I adore called Lafayette 148, and there are excellent options available at lower price points too. Madewell has some fantastic selections, and designer brands like Prada and Miu Miu consistently offer stylish versions of this coat. Moreover, since this trend draws from a past fashion era, numerous great vintage finds are available. If you're like me and enjoy scouring eBay for unique pieces, now is a perfect time for that.

Many of our editors—speaking of pillbox hats—have uncovered some amazing vintage finds. Brands like Gigi Burris offer beautiful hats, and even minimalistic labels like Toteme have some lovely options.

You discussed the return of a romantic bohemian style. What items are becoming more prevalent, and which brands do you recommend for this aesthetic? The floral print dress and gown are back in style. The silhouettes are evolving, moving away from traditional cuts to features like asymmetrical necklines seen at Victoria Beckham, which appear almost sculpted. At Loewe, there are hoop skirt versions—though perhaps not everyday wear—indicative of the new shapes emerging. At the Chloe Spring-Summer 2025 show, the collection concluded with voluminous, flowing, beautiful dresses that had shorter hemlines in the front and billowy sleeves, exuding a romantic and ethereal quality. Expect to see more innovative silhouettes and lots of flowing fabrics. Chiffon and organza fabrics will likely become prevalent, embodying a light, airy feel without being overly revealing while introducing a sense of freshness.

Another interesting piece regaining popularity is the slip skirt and slip dress, along with charming lace-trimmed pieces.
