Benny Blanco has just revealed to all men the precise way to make women happy.
Nikki Glaser, who recently got engaged to Selena Gomez at this year's Golden Globe Awards, mentioned that a genie granted Benny Blanco a wish. Many viewers, including myself, who weren’t familiar with Benny or their relationship, assumed Glaser's statement was accurate. This man certainly seems quite fortunate. However, it might have been premature to judge solely based on appearances. As I’ve learned more about Benny, I’ve started to wonder how Selena found a partner as thoughtful, loving, and emotionally intelligent as he is. Honestly, I thought men like him were a rarity, so it seems Selena received quite a wish herself.
Since the release of their album, I Said I Love You First, last week, the couple has been participating in numerous interviews. Yet, it’s not the album that has garnered the most attention (although it’s excellent)—it’s Benny Blanco. Clips from his interview on Jay Shetty’s podcast, On Purpose, have been making rounds all week, and the internet has collectively dubbed him a “walking green flag.” From Selena expressing that she felt “immediate safety” with Benny to Benny stating that men who don't listen are “idiots,” we’re in full agreement.
During the podcast episode titled “How Benny Taught Me to Trust Again,” Benny reveals that he compiled a list of qualities he wished for in a partner (with the help of his therapist!) before he and Selena started dating. His self-awareness and genuine desire for a “perfect yin and yang” partnership, as he describes it, is something people need to discuss more. In a world where dating can feel chaotic and ghosting has become commonplace, it's refreshing to know that some individuals still seek authentic relationships. That’s the foundation—becoming a “unit,” as Selena mentions, requires wanting it, and Benny certainly did.
Any partner might say they recognize their significant other’s strengths and weaknesses, which is commendable! However, Benny went beyond mere recognition; he quickly learned how to support Selena effectively in both areas. For instance, he states, “I know what she needs... she wants to talk to me before she goes to bed, she wants me to say ‘I love you’, she wants me to text her if I end up being two hours late.” Right there with you, Selena! He notes how simple and quick it is to check in via text, but emphasizes that “it really helps,” particularly in long-distance situations.
In one of the interview's standout moments, Benny addresses men for their lack of listening (finally!!). “A woman is going to tell you exactly what she needs,” he explains. Essentially, he conveys that being a supportive partner isn’t that difficult if you genuinely care to listen. And let’s clarify one thing: Listening as a man doesn’t earn you any special accolades—it’s simply what you should do for those you love.
Even the most aware and caring individuals encounter conflict, and the couple openly acknowledges they’re no different. Discussing their conflict resolution, Benny admits, “We’re the furthest thing from perfect in the world.” Moments later, he adds, “We’re perfect for each other.” He shares that he always wants to “fix things” for Selena, but he recognizes that strong women “have the world on their backs.” He continues by saying that sometimes, they “just want to vent about something, and that’s OK… you just listen.” Finally, a man who understands that being a woman can be challenging and frustrating—and that we don’t always need rescuing. When you pay attention, you realize people just want assurance that they can rely on you. It’s clear that no matter what ups and downs they encounter, Selena can depend on Benny.
I must note that I can’t believe Benny had his toes out during the entire interview, and yet I didn’t see any comments about them online. In an online world that can be extremely harsh, it highlights that what someone says, their true character, and how they treat others matter far more than their appearance, background, or career compared to others. In my view, Benny has inspired women everywhere to seek out genuinely kind men who never make them doubt their worth and respect.
