When I started watching Netflix’s Running Point, I never anticipated that the basketball-centric storyline would lead me to completely rethink my views on workwear. Observing Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson) move away from the quiet luxury aesthetic in favor of vibrant colors and power dressing inspired me in ways I haven't felt since my younger days watching How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Sex and the City. After just one episode, it became evident to me: we have a new workwear muse.
Running Point centers on former party girl Isla, who is unexpectedly made president of her family's basketball team, the Los Angeles Waves, after her brother enters rehab. It felt like a mix of Succession, Ted Lasso, and a hint of The Other Two. While the storyline quickly captivated me, I couldn't stop thinking about Isla’s strong, contemporary take on office attire.
After spending years working from home and then experiencing the “office siren” trend, I realized I had forgotten how to dress for the workplace, but Running Point reignited my inspiration. Here are the outfits from Isla Gordon that I'm looking to incorporate into my 9-to-5 wardrobe.
1. A vest and turtleneck

Although vests have been in vogue for some time, I never felt at ease wearing one alone to the office. Gordon presented a brilliant solution: layering a turtleneck underneath. I plan to combine this simple duo with my favorite work trousers and skirts during the transitional weather of spring.
2. A fitted-waist blazer

After years of opting for oversized blazers as my go-to work jackets, watching Gordon rock a cinched-waist blazer was the reminder I needed to try it out. The more tailored silhouette adds a feminine touch to the 9-to-5, making it a desirable addition to my weekly workwear lineup.
3. A textured set

Unexpected textures like tweed, silk, corduroy, or suede can elevate basic suiting styles. I’ll be pausing my use of cotton blends in favor of fabrics that bring a bit more excitement.
4. Bold pinstripes

Pinstripes are set to be among the top pattern trends of 2025, and Gordon wears them flawlessly in modern silhouettes and colors, steering clear of any stuffiness.
5. A button-down and black dress

Button-downs are a staple in workwear, but they don’t often inspire me. However, seeing Gordon layer hers under a dress reminded me to explore new styling options. While I may not be able to wear a midriff-exposing dress, I can style mine under one of my office-appropriate LBDs.
