I Tried On Abercrombie's Popular Bootcut Jeans, and I've Officially Become a Fan of Flared Denim.
Each year, we witness the return of a formerly trendy denim style that disrupts the fashion scene, and this year is no exception. Bootcut jeans and skinny jeans, the focus of considerable debate, are the standout styles of the year. While it's uncertain if Alix Earle’s collaboration with Frame has actually revived skinny jeans, there's no denying that Kendrick Lamar's double-denim performance at the Super Bowl confirmed the comeback of bootcut jeans. Following his performance, searches for his Celine pair surged by 700% on Net-a-Porter, while Levi's Superlow Bootcut Jeans saw a staggering 2750% increase in search interest since the year's start. Thanks to exciting moments in pop culture and the continuously changing fashion landscape—much to the chagrin of those who recall their past popularity—bootcut jeans are once again enjoying their moment. Recently, while scrolling through my curated For You page, one particular pair continually appeared, capturing the attention of the fashion community: the Abercrombie & Fitch Mid Rise Bootcut Jean. So, what makes these bootcut jeans so appealing that they've created a buzz on TikTok? Is it merely a viral sensation, or can these jeans truly transform one’s wardrobe? To investigate, I tried multiple sizes and leg lengths (which is one of the great perks of Abercrombie's denim collection). For reference, I wear a UK size 10 and stand at 5'10". Below, you'll find my candid thoughts on the Mid Rise Bootcut Jean.
1. Mid Rise Bootcut Jean in Dark Rinse, 26/Regular
- Style Notes: The first pair I tested was the Mid Rise Bootcut Jean in a 26 waist with a Regular leg. I typically wear a 27 or 28 waist based on fit, but I wanted to understand Abercrombie's sizing, so I opted for a smaller size. Starting with the positives, I loved the color. The Dark Rinse hue gives these jeans a designer look. Another advantage is the sizing; Abercrombie’s jeans come in three leg lengths: Short, Regular, and Long, helping you find the ideal fit. Crafted from soft denim, these felt incredibly flexible, even though they were the stiffest wash I tried. A bit of wiggling and a jump helped me button them up, but they felt tight on my thighs in a way that reminded me of all the issues I had with skinny jeans. However, I quickly grasped the allure of bootcut jeans. The gentle flare created an A-line silhouette that I found quite flattering, and they draped nicely over my boots. This wash would work beautifully in a double-denim outfit with a matching waistcoat, a textured belt, and cowboy boots, fulfilling all my Bella Hadid rodeo fantasies.
2. Curve Love Mid Rise Bootcut Jean in Dark Rinse, 31/Long
- Style Notes: Craving the comfort of a looser fit, I decided to size up, but perhaps too much. In the Long leg, I found my ideal length. At 5’10", I often struggle with ankle-length jeans, but these didn't have that problem, as they fell comfortably past my heel—a true win. Pairing them with heeled boots and an oversized blazer would be a dream, as they made my legs look longer and added to my height. The main drawback was the waist size. The unfortunate rippling sag was evident in my photos, and while they were much more comfortable, the oversized fit wasn’t in the fun, playful way that I prefer with my jeans.
3. Mid Rise Bootcut Jean in Medium, 28/Long
- Style Notes: Ultimately, I decided to stick to my true size, trying the Mid Rise Bootcut Jean in a 28/Long in the Medium wash. The longer I wore them, the more I realized why fashion enthusiasts love bootcut jeans. The soft denim made me feel like I could easily move in these jeans, and the long bootcut lengthened my legs to near-supermodel proportions. They sat perfectly on my waist, providing a lift in my bum and thighs that I hadn’t seen since I put away my skinny jeans.
Overall, I found numerous outfit combinations while trying these on. If you're looking to embrace your bohemian dreams, these jeans are ideal. Want to refresh the classic jeans-and-a-nice-top combo? They're just what you need. These jeans offer the perfect blend of lift, elongation, and comfort, filling a niche that many luxury brands struggle to achieve. Priced under £80, it's hard to argue against their value, which explains their quick sell-out.
