There is no quote I connect with more than Sylvia Plath’s fig tree metaphor from The Bell Jar. To summarize, the protagonist, Esther, envisions sitting beneath a fig tree where each fruit symbolizes a different possible future. One fruit represents being married, another signifies being an Olympic crew champion. However, her indecisiveness leaves her just sitting under the tree, hungry and unable to make a choice. This mirrors my feelings when trying to select a new hobby; the overwhelming options often leave me paralyzed. I may buy a guitar and promise to take lessons, but it eventually gathers dust after just one YouTube tutorial. I might get a tennis racket with an adorable outfit to match, only to play once and realize I lack the hand-eye coordination to excel.
Nevertheless, exploring various hobbies can be beneficial. It adds diversity to life, helps prevent burnout, and is generally more enjoyable than repetitive activities. My issue isn't the desire to explore; rather, the hobbies I gravitate towards usually have significant barriers or demand specialized skills. Therefore, instead of attempting to launch a music career, I'm shifting my focus to these simple hobbies that are ideal for casual engagement.
1. Start watercoloring
Believe me, I’ve purchased canvases and oil paint from Michaels, which can be pricey, and I never actually create anything. Watercolor takes up less space, is more affordable, and causes less mess. Plus, it’s hard to really mess up.
2. Give writing a shot
If journaling isn't your thing, the concept of writing might seem daunting. However, you don’t have to pen the next great American novel (though you might!). You can begin with a list of things you're thankful for, a free-flow writing exercise, or a creative prompt. As you establish a routine, you may look forward to your daily writing sessions. You likely have an unused notebook or can utilize your phone's notes app. And if you find it boring after a few weeks, no worries.
3. Read a new book
Reading is the one hobby that remains constant in my life. There’s a book out there for everyone’s interests. When the urge to try something new is strong, pick up a book related to the life you’re fantasizing about. If physical books are a challenge for you, audiobooks are a fantastic option.
4. Play pickleball
I understand that serious athletes look down on pickleball, dismissing it due to its perceived simplicity, yet that quality makes it suitable for someone like me who dabbles in hobbies. It’s much more manageable than tennis for those of us with less coordination, and it can be as social or competitive as you wish, allowing you to adjust according to your mood.
5. Learn calligraphy
Handwritten cards have become a rarity, and I often cringe at my own messy handwriting when I send one out. Recently, I bought a calligraphy workbook. It allows for practice while watching TV or listening to a podcast, making it a skill that’s easy to pick up without demanding hours of concentrated effort.
6. Explore YouTube workout videos
One drawback of workout studios is that after several months of sticking to one type of class, I tend to grow bored and want to try something new. That’s why I appreciate YouTube workout videos. There’s a multitude of classes available, minimal equipment is needed, and you won’t incur late cancellation fees if you decide to skip a session. It’s the perfect way to explore Pilates or other exercises without spending a fortune.
7. Complete a puzzle
Puzzles are great because they have a defined start and finish, making them ideal for someone managing various interests. Completing one brings a satisfying sense of achievement, allowing you to store it away until the next puzzle urge strikes. Plus, there are many charming puzzles that can be framed as decoration, serving as a visible reminder of a project you've completed.
8. Go hiking
I enjoy a good walk just like anyone else, but swapping your usual route for nearby hiking trails can elevate your daily routine. With warmer weather approaching, it’s an ideal time to put on your hiking boots. Before you know it, you’ll be searching for the most challenging trails.
9. Enhance your cooking skills
Cooking can range from making simple mac and cheese to preparing a full three-course meal. You probably already have the necessary kitchen tools, so with a quick grocery store visit, you can get started on a new dish. It’s an easy hobby to dive into without feeling guilty as you see supplies gathering dust.
10. Try cross-stitching
If you often have restless hands, cross-stitching could be the perfect hobby for you. It doesn’t require advanced art skills
