I've been in the fashion industry for 12 years—here are 5 wardrobe pieces I always invest in and 5 that I purchase at affordable prices.
Having worked as an editor and stylist in the fashion industry for over twelve years, I've learned quite a bit about shopping for clothes, particularly when and where it makes sense to invest, and what exactly is worth that investment. In my early twenties, I definitely fell into the trap of overconsumption, constantly attempting to keep up with the newest trends as a newcomer to the industry. Now, in my mid-thirties, I’m much more assured in my personal style, gravitating towards timeless classics and knowing where to shop effectively, making me more intentional with my purchases—rarely do I find myself regretting them now. After years of research to identify the perfect wardrobe staples for photoshoots, client styling, or articles like this one, I've identified which brands offer trustworthy quality and style. I’m eager to share recommendations on what wardrobe items are worth a little extra investment and which ones I still rely on the high street for. In this guide to shopping for 2025, I'll be passing on this knowledge to you.
So, let’s dive in. What affordable items can you rely on? For me, it’s all about the basics. I would love to be the kind of person who can sport a white shirt from The Row, and I'm sure the fabric is exquisite, but fundamentally, a white cotton shirt is still a white cotton shirt, right? The same goes for a white t-shirt—they're equally susceptible to coffee spills in my busy life as a mother. I won’t go so far as to recommend extremely cheap places like H&M or Primark, as you need clothes that can withstand washing and aging, especially since they’ll be worn frequently. However, I find that premium high street brands such as COS or Massimo Dutti provide reliable options. My top recommendation? Always check the fabric—look for 100% cotton (organic if possible), 100% linen, or cotton-poplin for shirts, as these materials will last over time.
Denim is another category where I tend to shop on the high street. I know this might be a contentious point, and other editors might disagree, but having once owned nearly 100 pairs of jeans (yes, I've significantly reduced that number), from £300+ designer pairs to H&M’s offerings, I still find that my most worn jeans are from high street brands. Again, focus on the fabric—if you can find sustainable organic cotton options, that's a better choice for both your wardrobe and the planet. My most favored pairs have consistently been from Arket, M&S, and Zara.
When it comes to splurging, I recommend spending on items that can truly make or break an outfit. Handbags are a no-brainer—an exquisite leather bag can elevate an outfit instantly and withstand the test of time, allowing for frequent wear, making the cost per use more justifiable. Outerwear follows the same principle—a good jacket or coat creates a strong first impression and offers versatility; choose wisely for a piece that transitions from workwear to casual outings, providing overall better value.
