This 9-to-5 style was prominent on the runway and is set to dominate in 2025.
As the majority of the world has adapted to a hybrid work model, with an increasing number of individuals working outside traditional office settings, there seems to be a nostalgia for the past. Suddenly, items such as office attire, business casual clothing, and formal accessories appear to be… appealing? Of course, these items aren’t necessarily being worn to the office anymore.
During the latest fashion month, designers such as Saint Laurent, Kallmeyer, Calvin Klein, Sergio Hudson, Hermès, and Ferrari showcased models dressed in blazers and button-ups. They sported ties and loafers. Models carried top-handle bags with a sense of purpose, reminiscent of a bustling Wall Street. There was nothing particularly avant-garde or rebellious about this; it simply felt like designers were drawing inspiration from a shifting work landscape, where dressing for the office is increasingly becoming a relic of the past. While offices are certainly not obsolete and the hybrid model for many has become less flexible, it feels different now—likely in a way that it never will again.
Having distanced ourselves from the necessity of office attire as we once knew it, we can now view it from a fresh angle. It no longer feels obligatory but rather transforms into something we genuinely desire to wear.
There’s a certain joy in donning a shirt equipped with a built-in tie or toting around a top-handle bag even when it holds no significant items, especially without the stress of conforming to a specific expectation or worrying about breaking a conscious or unconscious dress code. Dressing for the faux office of daily life feels far more enjoyable, and it’s something we can expect to see a lot more of in 2025.
