A single inhale of a sunny fragrance transports me to the vibrant cafes along the coast of Portofino, while a marine scent sets me adrift on a sailboat amidst the open seas of Maine, with sea spray in the air. However, when I first spritzed this newly launched perfume from a popular TikTok brand, I couldn't help but think of a certain ’90s rom-com character, which honestly makes me want to wear it even more.

      As someone born in the 2000s, I grew up enjoying the classics—Alicia Silverstone in Clueless, Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, and Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You. Although I hadn’t previously associated any fragrance with a specific character, this particular perfume is so charmingly adventurous that it made me want to revisit the 1999 remake of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. To understand why this scent triggers so many memories from a film released before my time, I revisited the plot, reflecting on her edgy, cool-girl style and falling in love again with her uplifting character journey as the bad boy Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) gradually breaks through her tough exterior.

      And then it struck me. The breathless moment when Patrick serenades Kat on the football field. Her sun-kissed blonde hair effortlessly styled and her witty comebacks. Their late-night drives filled with the electric tension of rising romance. Once I learned about the inspiration behind this captivating scent, everything made perfect sense. Detour, the latest addition to Noyz's esteemed fragrance collection, encapsulates unpredictability, boldness, and adventure in a bottle.

      “With Detour, I aimed to emulate the liberation of driving with the windows down, having no destination in mind,” Jérôme Epinette, the brand’s perfumer, shares with Who What Wear. This sense of carefree energy is prominent in its nostalgic blend of pink pepper, Spanish mandarin, and jasmine, which settles into a grounding combination of skin musk, vanilla, and Indian papyrus. Gardenia and tiare blossom enhance the mid notes, flourishing as the scent develops on your skin, leaving a lasting aroma that feels confident, warm, and vibrant—just like your favorite rom-com heroine. “Some of life's most memorable moments occur during detours, and we wanted this fragrance to embody that spirit,” explains founder Shaun Neff. “Life doesn’t always follow the plan, and that’s perfectly fine. Detour represents that unexpected breath of relief you didn’t realize you were missing.”

The bottle features an illustration of a vintage car resting in a forest clearing, symbolizing freedom, while its warm, earthy aroma conjures feelings of pure joy. “Detour is the floral fragrance for those who think they don’t like florals,” Neff explains. “We recognized a need in our collection for that ideal floral—something innovatively fresh yet warm enough to evoke sunshine.” With warmer weather on the horizon, this fragrance is practically begging to become your go-to summer scent. “[It’s] ideal for spring but also designed to last throughout summer, especially during festival season,” Neff mentions, hinting at the upcoming Coachella and Stagecoach events.
