Stylist Brad Goreski has had an eventful year, styling client Demi Moore in a variety of stunning outfits for her promotional tour of her groundbreaking film, The Substance. Although he is now among the most sought-after stylists in Hollywood, he remains thankful to his very first client: his mother. "I thanked my mom after the Golden Globes for allowing me to play with Barbie[s] as a child, because that kind of sparked everything for me. She was my first client, always attending events in evening wear. I had one Barbie, Crystal Barbie, that I was totally obsessed with. Fashion has been a part of my life from the beginning," Goreski reflected.

Goreski and Moore have collaborated for years and share a friendship that has led to memorable red carpet appearances, such as the Balmain swan dress Moore wore during the premiere of the FX series Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. However, this film offered a new and exciting opportunity. "As the film started to gain traction, Demi and I discussed our approach. I wanted her to look incredible. Honestly, I just wanted to do a great job for her and see her happy, so I poured everything I had into it," Goreski explained.

In the latest episode of The Who What Wear Podcast, Goreski sits down with Who What Wear co-founder Hillary Kerr to discuss the inspiration behind some of Moore's standout red carpet styles, his styling philosophy, and more.

The Substance premiered at Cannes last spring, and I heard you hadn't seen the film before styling. How did you prepare for such nuanced and subtle references to the film and her character without having seen it yet? Demi shared some behind-the-scenes photos and her makeup looks with me, but she also said before we started, "This is what it’s about. This is what happens. I’d like to reflect that in my outfits." When choosing dresses for her, I considered, "What gowns would look amazing on her?" I had always wanted her in Armani Privé because of the fit, the craftsmanship, and the elegance of their pieces—they just exude luxury. We’ve collaborated with Schiaparelli quite a bit, and Daniel is a huge fan of Demi. When they mentioned having a dress featuring a blade, it immediately reminded me of Demi mentioning some needles in the movie.

The Balenciaga gown with a slight hip distortion caught my eye when it first appeared on the runway, and I thought, "This dress is stunning. I need to have her wear it somewhere; it’s a showstopper." From Cannes to the Oscars, it was a complete collaboration. We discussed everything, had FaceTimes; she was incredibly involved in the process. She's the ultimate fashion partner anyone could hope for.

For the custom Armani Privé dress at the Golden Globes—it was her first time returning to that ceremony since 1997, a significant moment as it marked her first lead-actress win of the season and her career. How did that look come about? I was enamored with the fabric they created, a mix of metal and silk that embodies what Armani Privé represents. I loved how it moves and glimmers, and I wanted it in a rich gold.

Why that color? I felt she looked so golden; that was how I envisioned her. We conducted a swatch test, and Malin, who crafted both of Demi's gowns, worked tirelessly through the Christmas holiday to bring it to life. When we tried it on, I knew instantly that it was perfect.

The concept of the dress being asymmetrical was essential. I wanted to avoid another strapless look. A significant theme in The Substance revolves around balance, so the asymmetry mirrored that. The center of the gown represented Elisabeth Sparkle, while the two sides symbolized both Sue and Elisabeth. Jessica Paster advised me to select a dress that Demi would want to look back on fondly in ten years if she won, and I carried that thought into the Golden Globes.

I want to discuss the Critics Choice Awards because that look sparked a lot of discussions. It was the navy Schiaparelli with the pronounced hip, the laced corset back, and the hand-cut ribbons down the front. How did that look come together? I made an appointment to visit Schiaparelli because there was a specific gown I wanted her to try on. After trying on one couture gown that didn't suit her, I suggested the navy-blue ribbon dress. Once we tried it on, her excitement was evident from the fitting photos. They made meticulous modifications to the dress for her proportions, and we decided it
