Salma Hayek Pinault's Secret to Youthful Skin? Moisturizer Layering and This "Turkey Neck" Remedy.

Salma Hayek Pinault's skincare routine is refreshingly simple. She avoids retinol, exfoliating peels, and injectables, and even skips a morning face wash—a tip she inherited from her grandmother. "Your skin doesn’t get dirty while you sleep," the award-winning actress and producer jokes during a Zoom call. However, she does occasionally indulge in in-office treatments: "I have been using radiofrequency for years. It's the only thing I have done," she adds. "It was effective for me until I reached a plateau at 58, particularly under my jaw—I felt like a turkey."

It seems like her collaboration with Merz Aesthetics to discuss Ultherapy Prime came at the perfect time. This FDA-approved noninvasive treatment employs ultrasound energy to boost collagen and elastin production, giving the skin a firmer and plumper appearance. "I thought, 'Okay, I’ll give it a try, and if it works, we can keep talking,'" she recalls. Given that she has been named the first global brand ambassador for Ultherapy Prime, it’s safe to conclude the treatment worked wonders. "I felt assured—seeing my collagen in real time was great," she shares. "Usually, you see results in two to three months, but I noticed changes in just two weeks." While experiences can vary, most individuals see gradual improvements leading to a naturally rejuvenated look. Ultherapy is often dubbed the "nonsurgical facelift" due to its skin-tightening effects without the need for incisions or downtime. "It is the gold standard for lifting, targeting the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) layer, just like a facelift does," board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Levine stated about the procedure.

There is a prevalent misconception that those opting for in-office treatments need to have a high-maintenance skincare routine. Hayek Pinault debunks this idea. "Chica, I am so incredibly busy. I have countless home tools that I bought but never use," she admits. "Have you noticed my white hair? I can't be bothered to dye it every three weeks and sit in the salon for hours... I'd prefer to embrace the white." While noninvasive procedures like Ultherapy can be expensive, they require minimal time investment; typically, only one session is needed to see results that last around a year without touch-ups. "I prefer strong, effective solutions that don’t require frequent visits," Hayek Pinault states.

At home, she doesn’t stick to a rigid routine, opting instead to respond to her skin's needs on any given night. For example, if her skin feels dry, she applies a lightweight moisturizer and layers a thicker cream on top, a technique known as "moisturizer sandwiching." "I like Sisley's Black Rose Cream; it's jelly-like and feels like it absorbs well. Charlotte Tilbury just released the Water Cream as well," she notes. "Then I apply La Mer or Augustinus Bader on top to seal everything in. I wait about 20 minutes after the first layer before applying the second."

Her top tip for maintaining youthful skin is simply getting enough sleep. "I wish I had learned the importance of good sleep habits when I was younger," she reflects. "I’ve always had good skincare discipline thanks to my grandmother—she was obsessed with it, and it was part of our bond. She taught me a lot... I never go to bed without removing my makeup. Never. [But] there are many lifestyle choices I wish I could improve." To help relax at night, she uses magnesium supplements and aromatherapy and has found that bioidentical hormone therapy has enhanced her sleep over time.

Moisture, ample sleep, and an annual noninvasive treatment—this isn’t too complicated for an A-lister. "I don’t aim to look younger than my daughters," Hayek Pinault jokes. "I want them to see my true emotions—when I’m unhappy or proud. It’s all about finding what works for you. This is what works for me."
