As a former Beauty Buyer, there's a sculpting body tool I never expected to rely on, yet now I can't imagine being without it.
After spending more than 12 years in the beauty sector—as a journalist, facialist, consultant, and head of beauty purchasing at Liberty London—I have experienced the industry from every angle. I’ve tested thousands of products, negotiated with international brands, and dedicated years to identifying what truly deserves the hype (and what doesn’t). I’m excited to now share that insight with Who What Wear UK in a new monthly column, where I’ll discuss beauty products I genuinely value, particularly those that are often overlooked.
Let’s be real: the beauty market is oversaturated. There’s always a new release, a trending phenomenon, and a "must-have" ingredient vying for your attention. But which products are truly deserving of your time, money, and a place on your shelf? That’s what I’m here to clarify.
At-home microcurrent devices for facial care have made their way into many bathrooms. From the Foreo Bear to the Ziip Halo, these handheld gadgets are clinically shown to lift, firm, and sculpt the skin with sometimes impressive results. Among the numerous devices available, NuFace remains one of the top choices. Having debuted over 20 years ago, it was the first beauty device to receive FDA clearance, and the brand has sold over 4.5 million units. While the original NuFace is the top facial device in the U.S., the lesser-known NuBody (£383) is what I’ve been testing. It claims to tone and firm the body using the same microcurrent technology that made its facial counterpart famous. Although it’s not new—having launched a few years ago— it still feels underrated, particularly given the many people seeking improved skin texture. With so much focus on facial microcurrent devices (which I adore), the NuBody deserves its own spotlight.
**Pros**
- Helps to firm, tone, and smooth
- Easy to use
**Cons**
- Pricey
- Requires time and consistency to see results
**NuBody Review**
I initially tried the NuBody purely out of curiosity. At-home microcurrent for the body? It sounded niche and, to be honest, a bit unnecessary. As a midsize woman in my 30s, I tend to be realistic, but after a few uses, I was convinced. This device utilizes low-level electrical currents to stimulate muscles and boost circulation, leading to skin that appears tighter and more toned with consistent use. It's not a gimmick; it’s a commitment, but one that pays off if you follow through.
After a few weeks, I began to notice subtle yet gratifying differences: a smoother look on the back of my thighs, reduced puffiness around my knees, and an overall impression that my skin seemed more "awake." It’s the kind of change only I might notice at first, but it builds over time, and isn’t that the best kind?
**How to Use the NuBody**
I use the NuBody after showering, ideally on clean, slightly damp skin. First, I generously apply the NuFace Gel Primer (£78) to the targeted area, typically my thighs or arms. Then, I glide the device slowly over my skin in long, upward strokes. You’ll feel a gentle buzz—it is, after all, an electrical current. I wouldn't describe it as painful, but you can definitely tell it’s working.
The crucial elements here are pressure and patience. I dedicate around five minutes to each area and focus on consistent, fluid motions. It becomes almost meditative. If you've enjoyed dry brushing or gua sha, you’ll likely appreciate this ritualistic aspect as well. Sometimes I listen to a podcast, other times I simply enjoy a quiet moment. Regardless, it feels rewarding to invest in myself, rather than merely treating myself.
I've observed that results appear more quickly when I'm well-hydrated and use it regularly (three to five times per week). There’s no need for aggression or obsession—just consistency. Also, remember to reapply gel between areas, as the device glides best when the skin remains well-lubricated.
If you’re consistent with your skincare routine, enjoy at-home rituals, and want to enhance your results between treatments or workouts, this is ideal for you. It’s not a substitute for exercise or an instant miracle, so don’t cancel your gym membership just yet. However, it’s a tool that enhances your routine in a practical yet indulgent way.
Unlike other devices that quickly become popular, the NuBody has remained somewhat under the radar. Perhaps it’s due to its more subtle marketing or the fact that it takes at least four weeks to see noticeable results. Yet, in my opinion, that quality is what makes it worth mentioning: it operates quietly, steadily, and effectively—just like the best products do.
It also signifies a shift in how we view beauty. The NuBody is not flashy, nor will it go viral. However, it can become your secret
