We met on the (very sticky) dance floor of The Star & Garter, an iconic pub in Manchester, dancing to "You Spin Me Round" by Dead or Alive and hitting it off right away. After going through a tough breakup in my twenties, I had only just started dating again, but I hadn't had much luck with online dating apps. The night before I met Justin, I was out for drinks with a friend and told her that I had given up on dating and was completely happy being single and embracing my twenties—famous last words indeed. We dated casually for about a year before officially making it "official.” I was set on not being in a relationship during my twenties, but I soon realized that our regular date nights and weekend movie outings definitely indicated something deeper than just casual dating.
Justin proposed two years later while we were on vacation in New York. He had mentioned that marriage was never something he was interested in, so it caught me completely off guard. We enjoyed dinner at an amazing Italian restaurant in the West Village called Palma. The interior courtyard, adorned with candles and fresh roses climbing the walls, struck him as the perfect place to pop the question. I love Italian cuisine, so it felt fitting to be proposed to over a bowl of pasta.
When we returned home to Manchester, we chose the ring together. There's a fabulous vintage jewelry shop called Arthur Kay & Bro on Market Street that I've always admired from afar. It was essential for me that we picked the ring as a team, and Justin wisely knew that choosing a ring for me would never be a solo mission. Although I love rings, I hadn’t given much thought to what my engagement ring might look like—other than wanting something vintage. Ultimately, we ended up with a stunning Victorian boat ring from the 1890s, which was a delightful surprise.
The night before the wedding, we had separate dinners with our families. My family ordered Cosmopolitans and Manhattans in the hotel bar (a nod to New York!) before we dined in the hotel's restaurant with a bay view. I wore a black satin shift dress by Proenza Schouler, which I actually found before my wedding dress, paired with my classic Chanel flap bag and Manolo Blahnik heels adorned with bows—a reference to the bow design we used for our wedding stationery. Since I usually wear black 90% of the time, it felt completely right to dress in black the day before donning an all-white outfit! Meanwhile, Justin and his family enjoyed a meal at the nearby Castell Deudreath Hotel before heading to a pub, true to Northern style.
Being an early riser, I was naturally up at dawn. My first task of the day was to ice my face and use my Current Body LED Mask, followed by various hydrating and sheet masks to prep my skin. Can you tell that skincare is my passion?
Thanks to the generous team at Laura Mercier, I had the talented makeup artist Jessica Kohn to create my wedding look. I initially intended to do my own makeup, but in the end, I'm so grateful that I let her take the reins. I didn’t feel nervous until the morning of the wedding, and I would not have been able to apply my mascara! A few months prior, I had a trial with Jess at Laura Mercier HQ in London, where we reviewed my mood board and decided on products and colors for my look. The theme was classic and dewy, with a fun twist—being a beauty writer after all. Jess added subtle crystal gems around my eyes and brows, offering a playful touch.
Perfume is a passion of mine, and I wore Byredo's Eyes Closed layered with Essential Molecule's Molecule 01. I wanted to select something special to associate entirely with that day while also wearing a familiar scent. I sprayed both fragrances generously through my veil to ensure they lasted all day.
I was fortunate to have Cassie, the hairstylist recommended by the venue. She's one of those beautifully warm people who instantly helps you relax, which was crucial since I hadn't done a hair trial! I had considered cutting my hair into a bob for years but chose to keep it long for the wedding so we would have options. Ultimately, I went with a sleek low bun, which complemented my dress and veil perfectly. Two weeks after the wedding, I finally cut my hair!
I had always envisioned wearing a long, classic wedding gown, but when we booked our wedding in Portmeirion, Wales, I knew I wanted something different. The '60s vibe of Portmeirion inspired me to
