Before investing in mesh flats, take a look at the newer style I've been noticing fashion enthusiasts in Lisbon and Miami sporting.
In recent summers, it has seemed that anyone not donning flip-flops or Adidas Sambas was wearing mesh or fishnet flats—nothing else. These styles have dominated the warm-weather footwear scene, appearing everywhere from cities to vacation hotspots paired with linen trousers, poplin skirts, cutoff shorts, and more. As we begin to see the shoe trends for summer 2025, it’s evident that mesh and fishnet flats have not made it through the winter, or at least their stronghold on our attention has weakened, creating space for a new flat-sandal and sneaker alternative. Enter crochet flats.
The Merezhyvni flats from Hvóya, a Ukrainian footwear brand based in Kyiv, launched the crochet-ballet-flats trend when they went viral. They are hand-crocheted with a slightly wider toe bed, taking 20 hours to create each pair. Influencers like Débora Rosa from Lisbon, Brittany Bathgate from London, and Blanca Miró Scrimieri from Barcelona frequently wear them, styling them casually with linen pants, jeans, poplin skirts, and sundresses. After selling out, the brand, available through Moda Operandi, restocked the style and introduced a new design called the Chaotic Ballerinas, each pair crafted for 14 hours with a fine crochet hook.
The new flat-shoe trend has quickly gained momentum, with numerous brands, both high-end and affordable, releasing their unique versions of crochet and knit flats. While Magda Butrym and Alaïa represent the pricier options, brands like Zara, Mango, and Reformation offer more budget-friendly choices. Staud, Alohas, and Toteme fall somewhere in between. The greatest appeal? No two pairs are identical. From high vamps and Mary Jane straps to bold colors and distinctive patterns, there’s a wide array of options when it comes to crochet flats.
