I just discovered how to prevent my mascara from smudging, and everything has changed forever.
One of the most frequent questions I receive as a beauty editor is: "How can I prevent my mascara from smudging?" Honestly, I have often found myself in the same situation. With hooded eyes, I frequently experience mascara transferring onto my upper eyelids. Additionally, some mascaras have a tendency to flake or crumble beneath the lower eyelids. Regardless of whether you choose a high-end or a budget-friendly mascara, it seems that some of us are simply destined for smudged eye makeup. Even with the most meticulous application, mascara can end up where it shouldn't. This is one of my top beauty frustrations. To help eliminate mascara smudging for good, I sought advice from celebrity makeup artist Lan Nguyen-Grealis, who shares her professional tips.
**Prep Your Skin**
There are several factors that can lead to mascara smudging. One aspect you may not have considered is how your skincare can influence this, especially if you have oily skin or are prone to oily eyelids. "One common cause of smudging is oily eyelids that allow mascara to transfer," Nguyen-Grealis points out. If you typically use a heavier eye cream or moisturizer near your eyes, think about switching to a lighter formula. Oily or greasy skincare can interfere with your eye makeup, so look for lightweight eye serums, gel eye creams, and oil-free moisturizers to reduce slipping. If you struggle with oily eyelids, consider applying an eyeshadow primer to form a barrier between the mascara and your skin's natural oils.
**Shop Eye Prep:**
- **Templespa Windows of the Soul Eye Cream**: This eye cream hydrates and primes the area for makeup while feeling velvety soft, so it won't cause your mascara to smudge. I've found that my under-eye concealer has creased less since I started using it.
- **Beauty Pie Triple Hyaluronic Acid Elastic Lifting Eye Serum**: This lightweight eye gel has a cooling consistency that absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue, minimizing the risk of mascara smudging. In my opinion, this is one of Beauty Pie's standout products.
- **Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion**: If you have oily lids, adding an eyeshadow primer to your routine can help. Even if you don’t wear eyeshadow, it creates a barrier between your lashes and the oils from your skin that can cause problems.
**Perfect Your Mascara Application**
There are some important application tips that can help prevent and fix smudges while applying mascara. First, Nguyen-Grealis suggests curling your lashes with an eyelash curler to lift them up, making it easier to apply the mascara without smudging. "Using a mascara primer will also help the mascara adhere better," she advises. If you have deep-set or hooded eyes, consider using a lash guard, which protects your upper and lower lids while you apply mascara. Be careful not to overload your lashes; "A low-quality mascara can lead to smudging, flaking, and falling off, particularly if you apply too many coats," says Nguyen-Grealis. However, even with careful application, smudges can occur (if you've ever sneezed right after applying mascara, you know what I mean), so keep some small Q-tips handy to clean up any transfer. "Remember to dab rather than drag to remove smudges, especially if they’re still wet," she adds.
When it comes to eyelash curlers, Shiseido’s are among the most highly regarded for creating a long-lasting curl that stays put once your mascara is applied.
If you often get mascara on your eyelids during application, consider using a lash guard. Place it on your upper lid to prevent mascara from transferring. This also allows you to get close to the base of your lashes for added volume and length.
Small cotton buds are useful for quickly correcting smudges without disrupting the rest of your makeup. Pair them with an eye makeup remover or micellar water, and you’re all set.
**Try Tubing Mascaras**
If adjusting your skincare routine and application technique doesn’t help, Nguyen-Grealis suggests trying a tubing mascara, which can significantly improve the situation. Tubing mascaras are praised by many for their ability to prevent smudging. They create tiny polymer "tubes" that encase each lash and are typically more long-lasting than traditional waxy mascaras. One advantage of tubing mascaras is that they are often easier to remove—usually, warm water is enough to slide the tubes off your eyelashes without fuss. They are ideal for mature lashes or sensitive eyes as they are gentler during removal. "Choose a tubing or waterproof mascara, ideally with a smaller wand to minimize excess application and smudging," she recommends.
