Everything You Must Be Aware of Before Getting a Spray Tan

Regardless of whether it’s the peak of summer or the depths of winter, one aspect of my appearance remains unchanged—my fair complexion. As a beauty editor with very light skin and an enthusiasm for sunscreen, my skin has minimal opportunity to develop even a slight tan. Generally, I’ve learned to accept my paleness (after experiencing numerous fake tan accidents, I feel it's not worth the hassle), but I can’t ignore the pull for a bit of glow when summer arrives. If you’re not particularly adept at self-tanning like I am, what alternatives are available for safely achieving sun-kissed skin? Enter spray tanning.

Ideal for special occasions or major events, many of my acquaintances swear by spray tans for their quick application, professional results, and customization to match individual skin tones and preferences. However, for numerous people (myself included), the thought of undressing in front of a stranger can be quite unappealing. Therefore, I was eager to learn about what a spray tan entails, its duration, and its advantages and disadvantages.

I spoke with James Harknett, Global Creative Artist at Three Warriors, and Sophie Evans, a celebrity tanning artist from St. Tropez, who have tanned stars like Daisy Edgar Jones, Ashley Graham, and Bella Hadid, to gather their top spray tan tips.

      What Is a Spray Tan?

Spray tanning typically occurs through two methods: a booth machine or a tan technician using a specialized spray gun. No matter the method, both types of spray tans contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a sugar molecule that interacts with your skin’s amino acids, resulting in a temporary darkening of the skin’s surface. The spray gun method, which yields a more personalized finish, is the most popular choice. Most appointments will begin with a consultation with your tanning artist. “Use this time to discuss the desired look in terms of depth, any previous self-tans you've tried, and your satisfaction with those results, and when you plan to wash off the solution,” Evans elaborates. “This information is crucial in selecting the right solution for your skin type and lifestyle.”

How Does a Spray Tan Work?

Once the tanning artist determines the ideal formulation for you, the process begins. You'll need to tie up your hair, remove any jewelry, and disposable underwear will be offered if desired. Your therapist will apply a moisturizer or barrier cream to tricky areas. “The elbows, knees, hands, feet, and any notably dry spots should be treated to prevent excessive darkening,” Evans notes. Next, you'll step into the tanning booth or a pop-up tanning tent to start.

“The suitable tanning solution will be airbrushed in multiple light layers,” Evans explains. “We typically start with the front, then move to the back, and finally the sides, repeating the process. We'll spray your hands and feet last, with the face being done at the end.” If you wish to conceal any tan lines or desire some contouring, a darker solution is applied with a smaller, more precise airbrush. The entire process takes about five minutes—quite fast!

After your therapist confirms that your tan is dry, you may be asked to wear a robe for a few minutes before you get dressed, and you'll receive aftercare instructions. “You'll be advised on when to take your first shower, which is crucial as it's when the guide color washes away to reveal your final result,” Evans explains. From initial consultation to being ready to leave, the total procedure takes approximately 20 minutes.

Does Your Face Get Sprayed During a Spray Tan?

While the face is sprayed last during a session, whether or not to include it is entirely your decision. “A gentle spray on the face can be an instant radiance booster, and with a skilled therapist using a professional solution that suits your skin tone, the results can be stunning,” Harknett states. However, if you prefer to self-tan your face at home, your therapist can work to fade the tan down your neck and skip the face entirely.

Do You Wear Anything During a Spray Tan?

Ultimately, it’s up to you. Most tanning locations will provide disposable underwear, but Evans highlights that “regardless of what you wear, you’ll end up with tan lines.” Some individuals aim for this aesthetic, so she suggests bringing a bikini. “However, going without is the most common choice to eliminate tan lines,” she adds.

For your appointment attire, Harknett recommends something loose and flowy. “Ideally, go braless to avoid your tan rubbing against straps and causing uneven color,” he advises. He also suggests asking your therapist to dust talc over your feet if you plan to wear socks after, but flip-flops are a great choice for footwear post-appointment.

How Long Does a Spray Tan Last?

The duration of a spray tan varies from person to person. However, Evans rates them as potentially the longest-lasting self
