With unclear size charts, varying levels of bust support, and multiple fabric choices, there's a lot to sort out regarding swimwear. As a fashion editor, one of the most common questions I receive is where to find the best bikinis and swimsuits, which shapes are best for different body types (the ones that enhance your confidence), and why there is a price difference in the market.

      Above all, I recommend thinking small—shopping small, that is. In recent years, we've seen a surge of swimwear brands dedicated to sustainability, utilizing eco-friendly materials and adopting slow production methods. This approach is a stark contrast to fast fashion. Since 2021, there has been a growing interest in high-end, quality swimwear, led by brands like Hunza G. Their simple crinkle swimwear has established the standard for elevated styles often associated with sustainability. Consumer attitudes are shifting; individuals are investing more in brands, eager to learn about textiles and industry innovations.

      So, what defines a sustainable swimwear brand? For those familiar with my work at Who What Wear UK, you know I advocate for independent labels and natural materials, though these fabrics have their limitations. Swimwear materials are similar to those used in high-performance clothing: they need to be water-resistant, elastic, quick-drying, and functional. There are a few fibers and resins that meet these criteria. Most sustainable swimwear is created from one of three materials: Econyl (regenerated nylon sourced from landfills and oceans), Repreve (made from recycled plastic bottles), or recycled synthetics, such as post-consumer recycled polyester. Sometimes, recycled materials are combined with new textiles to ensure quality and durability. The most meticulous brands ensure that sustainability extends throughout production, using eco-conscious dyes, attachments, and fastenings; some hold Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) and Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certifications.
