The Outdoor Edit: I Inquired with Passionate Hikers About Their Beauty Must-Haves, and Here Are the Results.
Between 2019 and 2021, I developed a love for hiking. After my initial experience, I was captivated by how it helped me escape from daily stressors so quickly. Before long, I aimed to hit the trails at least once a month or every other month until the weather made it impossible. However, life has become busier since then, and I seldom find the chance to enjoy quality time in nature. So, when I learned that Peak & Pace, a wellness community that originated from a New York-based running group, was organizing a hike upstate, I was immediately interested. "New York is a city where you can meet many people, but finding others with similar mindsets is challenging, so I wanted to create something where I could connect with new people, get outside more, and form a community," says founder Owen Akhibi Herrera. "What started as a group of 12 has now grown to over a thousand." I quickly understood why so many individuals were drawn to this group. The warm atmosphere reminded me of my early hiking days, and as many would put it, the company you keep makes all the difference in an experience. During the hike, I also noticed that many of my fellow hikers looked ready for photos despite the heat and humidity. I usually go for a bare face with a slicked-back bun or ponytail, but seeing others with glowing skin, rosy cheeks, and mascaraed lashes made me reconsider why I hadn't embraced a full beauty routine before my hikes. Naturally, I figured if I was going to try this for myself, I needed the right products, and luckily, I managed to get a few hikers to share their top recommendations for nature-proof beauty essentials. Keep reading for the full details.
**Tia's Picks**
"This leave-in conditioner makes my hair incredibly soft and defined," Tia shares. "I feel like Brazilian hair products are more advanced for curly hair than some U.S. brands that don't provide as much definition."
**Beauty of Joseon Revive Snail Mucin Ginseng Serum**
"I apply this snail mucin product to hydrate my skin and maintain a glow throughout the day," Tia explains. "While it's meant for overnight use, I also wear it during the day."
**Maki's Picks**
**Beauty of Joseon Daily Relief Sunscreen**
"This went viral on TikTok, and while that platform can be daunting, I wanted to try it because of all the positive reviews," Maki says. "I found it at a shop in Soho and bought it—I'm really pleased with it. It's super lightweight and doesn't irritate my under-eye area."
**Supergoop! Play Everyday Lotion SPF 50 Face & Body Sunscreen**
"I enjoy a dewy look!" Maki admits. "I know some people prefer not to look glossy since we're obviously sweating, but I appreciate that glow. I don't burn, but I do tan, so I make an effort to stay on top of my skin health."
**Maya's Picks**
**Black Girl Sunscreen Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion**
"One of my main priorities before heading out for a hike is skin preparation," Maya states. "I have different sunscreens for my face and body, but I use Black Girl Sunscreen on my face. It provides a matte finish, which I prefer as it helps manage sweat while I'm outdoors."
**La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Matte Moisturizer SPF 30**
"For my moisturizer, I use the Toleriane Double Repair Matte Moisturizer from La Roche-Posay, designed for oily and combination skin," Maya says. "It keeps my face hydrated and contains SPF 30. Having grown up with eczema, I've found that sweat in the summer can cause flare-ups, so this is one of several products I use to manage that."
**Aliah's Picks**
**MAKEUP BY MARIO Surrealskin 16hr Soft Setting Spray**
"When I want a glow, I apply this setting spray," Aliah reveals. "It gives such a flawless and dewy appearance. I start with this and then follow up with my ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr setting spray after. Even after sweating, it truly holds up."
**Gucci 24 Hour Full Coverage Luminous Matte Finish Foundation**
"As a tip, I've substituted my concealer with a lighter shade of the Gucci foundation, and it has impressive lasting power," Aliah shares. "Just make sure to hydrate your under-eyes. I begin with the Topicals Faded Under Eye Mask and then use shea butter as a primer."
**Vannesa's Picks**
**Juvia's Place The Olori 3 Palette**
"I'm experimenting with the sunset blush trend, which involves blending two or three blushes," Vannesa mentions. "I prefer oranges and pink
