If you have a passion for fashion, you're likely familiar with Fashionphile. This American luxury recommerce brand specializes in buying and selling pre-owned designer handbags, shoes, jewelry, watches, and accessories from esteemed labels such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton, transforming the fashion resale market entirely. The brand is led by founder and president Sarah Davis. While Davis has established a highly successful fashion business, her journey was anything but straightforward.

Originally, she aimed to become a lawyer, excelling in debate throughout high school, graduating from law school, and passing the bar exam. However, her career took an unexpected turn, ultimately leading her to create the largest online platform for ultra-luxury handbags and accessories in the U.S. While attending law school, Davis demonstrated resourcefulness by taking on various jobs, such as cutting boys' hair and starting LawSwap.com, a site for reselling used law books. Her entrepreneurial spirit shone through, but it was a serendipitous conversation that altered her path. After overhearing a discussion about reselling on eBay, Davis became curious. She began selling her own items on the platform and quickly realized a pattern: luxury handbags and accessories sold more quickly and held their value better than other items.

Recognizing the untapped potential in the luxury resale market, Davis launched Fashionphile in 1999 as an eBay storefront. What began as a side project flourished into a thriving enterprise over the following 26 years. Today, Fashionphile has its headquarters in San Diego and New York City, an office in Tokyo, and retail locations across the country. The company shows no signs of slowing down, with 2024 poised to be its most profitable year to date.

Listen to the latest episode of Second Life to discover how Fashionphile's success stems from Davis's keen ability to identify the lasting value of luxury items and create a reliable platform that meets the increasing demand for sustainable, high-end fashion.
