Don’t Let Your Slim Jeans Find Out—They’re Being Supplanted by This Retro Yet Stylish Denim Trend

Don’t Let Your Slim Jeans Find Out—They’re Being Supplanted by This Retro Yet Stylish Denim Trend

For a brief period, I truly believed the rumors. Every discussion with my colleagues seemed to center around one particular topic: the comeback of skinny jeans. At that time, all the signs pointed in that direction: nostalgia for the 2010s was gaining momentum, influencers were incorporating them into their outfits, and I even found myself (which I’m not especially proud of) searching online for styles to purchase. However, just a few months later, the excitement has diminished, and that once-popular silhouette has quietly faded from view. In its place, another so-called "dated" denim trend is making a much more convincing return.

Flared jeans, characterized by their swishy, voluminous design and a boho vibe that resonates particularly well this season, are officially gaining popularity. This week, actress Simone Ashley was seen in New York sporting a light blue, ’70s-inspired pair. Paired simply with a black vest top, the ensemble was theoretically understated, but the retro cut added a level of flair unmatched by any other denim style.

With the additional fabric and the subtle elegance of movement with each step, flared jeans have a presence that skinny jeans simply can’t rival. Once a staple of ’70s fashion, flared jeans have never quite regained the same mainstream prominence. Perhaps that’s why they’ve long been deemed "dated." However, with the boho revival in full effect—thanks in large part to brands like Chloé and Isabel Marant—this nostalgic style suddenly feels contemporary again.

As we transition away from summer shorts toward styles that offer a bit more coverage, I'll be reaching for flares with much more enthusiasm than any skinny jeans. If you’re considering doing the same, keep scrolling for my selection of the best flared jeans available now.
