Every fashionista I know is bringing these once-controversial pants to Europe.
Each summer, I get the sense that there are whispers about the return of capri pants. Even though these pants have enjoyed popularity for several seasons, it feels like they haven't completely made a comeback. This is largely due to them being the second most divisive style after skinny jeans; people either love them or they don't. While capri pants may be endorsed by Carrie Bradshaw, they aren't as widely adored as some of her other fashion choices.
This summer, Hailey Bieber was seen wearing a pair of polka-dotted capris by the Spanish brand Paloma Wool. Unlike capri pants, polka dots have firmly reestablished themselves as a trend, and there’s no debate about it. Often linked to the somewhat cringy twee style of the 2010s, polka dots were once deemed too cutesy. However, during a time when fashion is becoming less serious—with Sperry boat shoes adorned with playful beads and Birkin bags embellished with quirky additions—the revival of charming polka dots makes perfect sense.
While spending three weeks in the south of Spain and a week in Barcelona earlier in June, I observed that nearly every stylish woman was wearing polka dots. Although this pattern aligns with the Spanish fashion aesthetic, especially in flamenco dresses, it seemed that even fashion-savvy tourists were donning them. As someone who has long appreciated cute yet laid-back fashion, I can easily see the attraction. Polka-dot capris are enjoyable! They add a vintage flair to an outfit, remain sleek, and pair well with popular items like thong sandals, funky sunglasses, and boatneck tank tops.
It seems everyone is packing them for their summer trips to Europe, including myself, and I envision them as a summertime essential that can transition into fall. Just picture a charming pair of polka-dot capris teamed with an oversized chunky sweater! It strikes the perfect balance between 2010s twee and the playful style we all crave for 2025.
