It's clear that Simple Mills has established itself as a leading name in the consumer packaged goods (CPG) sector, with packaging that is easily identifiable on any shelf. Focused on producing gluten-free, grain-free, paleo-friendly, and non-GMO products, Simple Mills has become a favorite among health-conscious shoppers looking for convenient, nutritious options without compromising flavor. At the forefront of the brand is Katlin Smith, the founder and CEO, who transformed her personal journey towards healthier eating into a thriving business.

Similar to many entrepreneurial ventures, Simple Mills originated from frustration. After starting her career as a strategy and operations consultant, Smith found herself in a demanding lifestyle characterized by long hours, frequent travel, and a diet high in processed foods that left her feeling exhausted and unhealthy. In search of a better way, she adopted a paleo diet focused on whole, nutrient-rich foods. However, the available market options failed to provide enticing, ready-made choices that matched her new dietary preferences. Driven by frustration yet inspired, Smith began experimenting in her kitchen in Atlanta with recipes incorporating almond flour, coconut sugar, and other clean ingredients.

Following months of experimentation—refining ratios, testing flavors, and baking numerous batches—she achieved her first significant success: an almond flour muffin mix that was simple to make and delicious. In a bold move, she cold-called her local Whole Foods to ask about shelf space and was unexpectedly invited for a meeting. Bringing along fresh muffins baked from her mix, she impressed the team immediately. The store agreed to carry her product, officially launching Simple Mills and setting off its rapid growth.

Eager to expand beyond a single product, Smith realized the importance of formal business knowledge. She returned to school, taking courses in accounting, entrepreneurial selling, and other crucial subjects. This education was critical as she pitched to investors and secured the necessary funding to widen her product range. Beginning with muffins, the brand grew to include snacks and baking essentials, all adhering to the principle of real food made simple.

Today, Simple Mills products are available in over 30,000 stores across the country, from major chains to local grocery stores. The company's dedication to quality and innovation has struck a chord with millions, driving phenomenal growth. A significant milestone for the brand came when it was acquired by food giant Flowers Foods for an impressive $795 million—the largest exit by a female founder in recent CPG history.
