The Naked Dress is Not Alive Anymore—Unless It’s the Plot-Twist Variant that Dakota Johnson Recently Wore on the Red Carpet
If you're acquainted with my byline or my TikTok profile, you know I've been quite critical of the naked dress trend over the years. To me, it's become excessively prevalent on the red carpet, rendering it somewhat unexciting. However, Dakota Johnson has managed to completely shift my perspective on the matter. At the 2025 Zurich Film Festival today, Johnson donned a naked dress that transformed the narrative around this daring trend, which has captivated celebrities since Cher's Bob Mackie creations in the '60s. Rather than opting for a conventional column-style naked dress that is sheer throughout, Johnson's electric blue custom Gucci gown bursts into a voluminous tulle design below her hips. In a press release, the Italian label characterized the design as a "deep blue gown featuring a stretch lace top with a high neck and long sleeves, a low Basque-style waistline, and a dramatic full-length skirt of layered tulle."
