A Fashion Insider's Guide to Kenya: Recommended Accommodations, Culinary Delights, and Packing Essentials
Welcome to Out of Office…, Who What Wear UK's stylish travel guide that offers a fashionable perspective on various destinations by consulting creatives who can advise on accommodations, dining, and crucially, what to pack. This month, Kelly Eastwood, a conscious fashion and lifestyle influencer, shares her insights for an unforgettable journey to Kenya. Having been raised in Kenya, like my father before me, I have been shaped by the vast savannahs, endless coastlines, and a profound appreciation for nature. Fashion became my medium for storytelling, but conservation remains central to my identity. I proudly serve as an ambassador for No More Plastic and Local Ocean Conservation in Watamu, the coastal village of my upbringing, and I support both WWF UK and Tusk in their efforts to safeguard the marine life and ecosystems that filled my childhood with wonder.
Currently, I split my time between Kenya and London with my five-year-old (and another on the way), making it increasingly vital to instill my passion for the natural world in them from a young age. Kenya is more than just a destination; it embodies vibrant culture, incredible wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes, and I’m excited to share some of my favorite spots with you.
1. Ol Malo – A family-run lodge on the outskirts of the Laikipia plateau that seamlessly combines luxury and conservation. Days spent here involve horseback riding, nature walks, engaging with local communities, and dining under the stars.
2. Watamu Villa Rental – There’s nothing like awakening to the sounds of the Indian Ocean, with stunning white-sand beaches, meandering mangroves, and warm turquoise waters brimming with marine life. Renting a villa in Watamu offers privacy, space, and a genuine connection to the beach paradise I call home.
3. House in the Wild – A hidden treasure near the Maasai Mara, this eco-retreat is family-friendly and offers direct access to wildlife, all while being deeply connected to community and conservation efforts.
Dining Spots:
1. Cultiva (Nairobi) – A popular farm-to-table restaurant that buzzes with creativity and vibrant, seasonal flavors.
2. Peponi Hotel (Lamu) – Located right on Shela Beach, this renowned venue is perfect for enjoying sundowners and fresh seafood, with breathtaking views.
3. The Talisman (Nairobi) – An eclectic eatery set in a lush garden in Karen, ideal for leisurely lunches.
Shopping Recommendations:
1. Village Market (Nairobi) – Here, you'll find an array of contemporary Kenyan designers and craft collectives alongside international brands, art galleries, cafés, and weekend markets showcasing local talent.
2. Watamu Village – Full of hidden gems and handmade crafts; shopping here directly supports the coastal community. Don’t miss the Italian ice cream.
3. Camp & Lodge Gift Shops – Often overlooked, these venues are excellent for acquiring beautifully crafted local items while supporting artisans and conservation projects.
Activities to Experience:
1. On the Beach – Engage in kitesurfing, deep-sea diving, enjoy sundowners on a traditional Swahili dhow, and participate in local conservation efforts: join beach clean-ups, visit rehabilitation centers, or release rehabilitated turtles back into the ocean.
2. On Safari – An experience that is truly transformative. Guided game drives bring you up close with elephants, lions, giraffes, and zebras while expert rangers narrate stories about the ecosystem and vital conservation work.
3. Give Back – The most impactful way to depart from Kenya is to leave a positive legacy. Support community initiatives, conservation organizations, or artisan collectives even after your visit—whether by donating, raising awareness, or purchasing directly from them online.
