I Recently Requested a Makeup Artist to Demonstrate the Proper Way to Apply Lip Liner—Here’s What I Discovered.
There’s no doubt that a quality lip liner plays various roles in your makeup routine. When used correctly, it can extend the wear of your lipstick, enhance the fullness of your lips, and add depth to a look that might otherwise seem flat. It can also define and contour, conceal, and even transform a lip color you once didn’t like into your new favorite hue. In my view, few makeup products are as versatile as the simple lip liner, so I often find it surprising when people say they skip it entirely.
While I am surprised, I do understand why many may overlook lip liner. The process of tracing and outlining can be challenging, particularly for those new to using a liner and uncertain about how to maximize its benefits. Thus, I decided to consult makeup artist Amanda Bell to get her expert advice on applying lip liner expertly. Here’s what she shared…
**What Are the Advantages of Using a Lip Liner?**
“Lip liners are versatile,” Bell tells me when I ask about the benefits of incorporating one into your makeup routine. “You can provide definition to the natural shape of your lips, make them appear fuller by overdrawing or highlighting the cupid’s bow or the lower lip’s bow. The choice of liner can alter the shade of your lipstick, and by filling in your lips with a liner first, you can create a base that enhances the longevity of your lip color.”
**What Type of Lip Liner Is Best?**
Currently, lip liners are available in various forms, from classic pencils to creamy formulas infused with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, and even felt-tip pens. Choosing the right style of lip liner really comes down to personal preference. “I personally favor a creamy lip liner for a precise line or a water-based stain with a fiber tip for a more natural effect,” Bell mentions. Conversely, I prefer a traditional pencil since I find the slightly firmer tip allows for easier application.
If you opt for Bell’s preferred formulas, she has some tips: “I place the creamy lip liner in the freezer for 20 minutes before sharpening it for a sharp tip. Alternatively, if you’re using a felt-tip stain, position it on its lid to enhance product flow before application.”
Now that you’ve chosen your lip liner, let’s talk about effective application. Naturally, I asked Bell for her top tips on applying lip liner, so keep reading for a useful guide paired with step-by-step videos for your reference.
**How to Apply Lip Liner:**
1. **Prep Your Lips**
“To achieve a very precise lip line, preparation is key,” Bell explains. “Exfoliate the lips, apply balm, and blot.” Start by using a lip scrub to eliminate buildup and create a clean, smooth canvas for subsequent products. After that, apply a light layer of lip balm and blot away any excess with a clean tissue. This will ensure it doesn’t interfere with or alter the finish of your lip liner while keeping your lips soft and hydrated.
2. **Sharpen Your Liner**
“Make sure the lip liner is sharpened to a precise point,” advises Bell. How to achieve this depends on the type of liner you’re using, so be sure to check before starting. Pencil liners can be sharpened with a sharpener, while some stylo-style liners may simply require twisting from the bottom to reveal more product. Additionally, some lip liners include a built-in sharpener in the cap or at the bottom.
3. **Choose Your Starting Point**
There are no hard and fast rules for where to begin applying your lip liner. “I typically assess the lips and determine where to start, whether at the cupid's bow or elsewhere to balance the lip shape,” Bell shares. Personally, I prefer to start at the bottom corner, outlining the lower lip first to build confidence before moving to the cupid’s bow.
4. **Start With Soft Strokes**
If you’re new to applying lip liner or wish to gradually build up pigment, Bell suggests starting with small, gentle strokes to outline. “I use soft, feathery strokes at first, gradually increasing the definition and color,” she tells me. This method allows you to create the desired shape before advancing to the next step.
5. **Trace Your Outline**
“Once I’ve softly traced the outline, I apply a continuous, precise line,” Bell explains. This is the moment when your lip liner really comes to life.
6. **Tidy Up, If Needed**
If you make a mistake, don’t worry; it’s easy to refine your lip line without needing to start over. Using a small flat brush, take a bit of concealer that matches your skin tone and tidy up the edges of your lips. Follow this with your favorite lipstick or lip gloss to finish the look.
