If there's just one trend to pay attention to from Fashion Month, let it be this one.
Each fashion season, a select few trends become widely popular, whether seen on the runways or in the streets. This could involve a specific trending piece, such as Miu Miu's micro miniskirt or Prada's bucket bag, or a trendy silhouette, like funnel-neck trenches and leather bombers. During the F/W 25 fashion season, the standout trend was anything that felt soft and furry, encompassing shearling coats and faux-fur stoles. On the runways in February and early March, the fur trend gained momentum, appearing as skirts at Ferragamo on model Alex Consani and as scarves at Miu Miu, where some cone-bra-clad models wore furry strips around their necks while others casually draped them over one arm. Chloé introduced a 1970s-influenced 2015 aesthetic with fur-trimmed quilted jackets in mauve, a color evocative of the mid-2010s. Prada showcased the material in creative forms, including one coat with a plastic-like overlay resembling your grandmother's couch. Fur-trimmed blazers were featured at Valentino, and Fendi honored its heritage with a multitude of furry forms, including coats, bags, stoles, and more. (During a re-see after Fendi's show, I discovered that nearly all fur coats in the fall collection were made from shearling.) Designers such as Altuzarra, Gucci, Ferrari, Gabriela Hearst (who, according to British Vogue, used silk to imitate fur), Simone Rocha, Tod's, Bally, Marni, Alaïa, among others, also integrated this fabric into their collections. Following a subtle introduction of the trend on the S/S 25 runways last September, it was clear that designers recognized the demand for fuzzy pieces, leading them to explore various ways to include faux fur and shearling in the upcoming collections.
Outside the runways, during February and March, fashion capitals like New York and Paris saw furry details making a statement among attendees. Many chose vintage furs sourced from antique shops, The RealReal, or their relatives’ closets. In street style, new, genuine fur was not prominently featured, with secondhand, faux-fur, or shearling garments being the preferred options. Items like Prada's notable faux-fur sleeve coats from the F/W 22 collection, Toteme shearling outerwear, and Penny Lane-inspired jackets were popular. Given the cold temperatures in New York City during fashion week, warm and cozy layers were essential for moving between shows.
Celebrities have also embraced this trend. This season, Hailey Bieber has been seen in furry outerwear from Toteme, along with vintage pieces from Saint Laurent and Ducie. Rihanna was spotted arriving at her favorite Los Angeles restaurant, Giorgio Baldi, wearing a leather bomber jacket paired with a white fur scarf. Meanwhile, Kendall and Kylie Jenner welcomed 2025 in fuzzy coats while vacationing in Aspen. Even as the weather begins to warm, fashion's focus on soft, furry items—from outer layers to bag accessories—remains strong.
