I Tested Deodorants Ahead of Summer—These 13 Are Completely Sweat-Proof

I'm 33 years old, and I feel like I've been searching for the ideal deodorant for most of my life. In my teenage years and early twenties, I'd purchase whatever was on sale at the supermarket, often opting for products that were heavily scented, excessively drying, and frequently ineffective. However, as I've developed a bodycare routine and gained a better understanding of how ingredients impact my skin (particularly my sensitive underarms), I've taken a more thoughtful approach. Additionally, my role as a beauty editor has provided me with the chance to try numerous formulas. Throughout the years, I’ve pinpointed what I like (roll-on applicators, gel formulas, eucalyptus fragrances) and dislike (thick textures, powdery sprays, overly sweet scents), as well as what actually works for me.
Last summer was the perfect environment for testing. The UK experienced several heatwaves, and I was consistently working out, walking everywhere, and trying to dress appropriately for the intense humidity. Although I’m not particularly prone to sweating, I still require deodorant to feel fresh and comfortable, preferably one that isn't sticky, doesn't irritate my skin, and avoids leaving marks on my clothes (which really annoys me). I closely observed how each product performed: Did it prevent odour? Was it comfortable on the skin? Did it leave any residue? I also considered texture, scent options, ingredients (including whether they contained aluminium), and how well they worked on sensitive skin. Whether you’re seeking a natural formula, clinical-strength option, or a dependable everyday choice, the following list features the deodorants I would genuinely recommend based on my testing over a hot summer.
What to Look for in a Deodorant
When selecting deodorant, it’s essential to think about more than just the fragrance. As a facialist, I always advise starting with your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, search for fragrance-free or alcohol-free options with calming ingredients like aloe vera or a cooling gel texture. If you sweat heavily, an antiperspirant containing aluminium salts could help block sweat glands, while those looking for a more natural choice might consider formulas with baking soda or magnesium—these are usually aluminium-free deodorants. Texture and format are also important. Gels, creams, balms, sticks, and sprays each provide different experiences, so determining what feels best for you is worthwhile. Lastly, take your lifestyle into account. Long workdays, strenuous workouts, or frequent travel may necessitate a product that offers extended wear or added odour protection.

Nécessaire
The Deodorant Gel

I realized I had found my ideal deodorant last year during a trip to Australia. While hiking in the outback at 38°C and not feeling (or smelling) remotely sweaty, I knew I had found a winner. The light gel texture not only feels cooling and soothing but is also completely invisible and doesn’t leave any unwanted residue or stain clothes. I enjoy the fresh eucalyptus scent, which isn’t overpowering, and I also appreciate the fragrance-free version.
Pros:
- Gel formula
- Doesn’t leave stains or residue
- Suitable for sensitive skin
Cons:
- Fragrance-free version may be less effective for heavy perspiration days
2. Salt & Stone Deodorant
Best Fragranced Deodorant
Format: Stick
Fragrance Options: Neroli & Basil, Santal & Vetiver, Bergamot & Hinoki, Saffron & Cedar, Black Rose & Oud
Key Ingredients: Seaweed extract, probiotics, hyaluronic acid, naturally derived oils
Aluminium-Free: Yes
Salt & Stone's deodorants had the best scents of all the options I tested. With five incredible, long-lasting fragrances to choose from, my favorite was Santal & Vetiver, which smells very elegant. While I usually lean towards roll-ons, the stick format has a balm texture that feels light and silky on the skin, avoiding any residue or dryness. If you want to smell great from head to toe, I'm also a fan of their body sprays and lotions.
Pros:
- Long-lasting odour control, even during heat or exercise
