If I've learned anything this summer, it's that this formerly out-of-date dress style has made a significant comeback.
Summer is in full swing, and since the first heatwave in May, there's been one essential piece of my capsule wardrobe that I can’t stop thinking about: dresses. While I enjoy midi and maxi styles, I have a particular fondness for short and loose designs. So, it felt serendipitous when I came across one of my favorite fashion influencers (and fellow Who What Wear UK team member) on Instagram, showcasing a silhouette I had previously overlooked: the swing minidress.
There’s very little that Who What Wear UK’s senior branded content editor, Rebecca Rhys Evans, can’t persuade me to invest in. I’m continually impressed by her wardrobe choices (whether I observe them from a distance or up close at the office), and this instance was no exception. Although I appreciate the classic aesthetic of timeless silhouettes like a drop-waist dress or a shirred maxi when the weather is warm, my summer preference is always for a loose-fitting style with a shorter hem. And why is that? Simply put, they’re just so effortless.
If you've read my content before, you’ll recognize that I’m quite discerning about the trends I choose to embrace. I look for pieces that have that throw-on-and-go convenience while seamlessly integrating with the rest of my core capsule wardrobe, accessories, and footwear. This is precisely why I have come to adore the swing minidress. Traditionally characterized by a slightly fitted bodice and a flared A-line skirt that “swings” out from the bust or waist and rests above the knee, today’s chic swing minidress is a significant departure from the Mary Quant mini that gained popularity in the '60s. Recently, swing silhouettes were all over the London and Paris spring/summer 2025 catwalks, from the Chloé runway where Alexa Chung's iconic swing mini was first seen (see below) to Christopher Esber and Miu Miu. While each style presented something unique and refreshing, they all shared a common thread: their swing minidresses reflected the rising “dollcore” aesthetic from the 2010s. Swing dresses often incorporate elements from other familiar styles, such as babydoll dresses or cotton styles with lace trim, and there are no strict rules regarding a swing style; as long as the skirt flares out, you’re good to go!
The babydoll swing mini dress worn by Alexa Chung is a perfect example due to its slightly flared skirt! Therefore, it was no surprise to me when high street brands quickly followed the lead of luxury fashion houses after fashion month. Labels like Reformation, Ganni, Rixo, and Réalisation Par have introduced a plethora of swing minidresses that appeal to both Gen Z and millennials. From vibrant prints to lace broderie accents, the market is currently filled with an abundance of swing minidresses. And the best part? They can also be styled for autumn with tights and either flats or boots.
Layered under a coat and paired with tights and loafers, this dress delivers the same effortless vibe as it does in summer with flip-flops or sandals. Even though the mix may vary, the charm of the swing minidress remains constant. Keep scrolling for the 18 best swing minidresses available right now.
