If I've learned anything this summer, it's that this previously out-of-fashion dress style has made a major comeback.

Summer is in full swing, and ever since the first heatwave hit back in May, one capsule wardrobe item has been on my mind: dresses. While I appreciate a midi or maxi length, I’m particularly drawn to short and loose styles. So, it felt serendipitous when I came across one of my favorite fashion icons (and fellow Who What Wear UK team member) on Instagram in a silhouette I hadn’t considered before: the swing minidress. There’s very little that Who What Wear UK’s senior branded content editor, Rebecca Rhys Evans, can’t persuade me to purchase. I always admire her outfits (both from a distance and up close in the office), and this time was no exception. While I love the outfit-enhancing charm of a classic silhouette like a drop-waist dress or shirred maxi on a sunny day, my summer favorite is undoubtedly a loose style with a short hem. Why? Because they’re just so easy to wear.

If you’ve read my previous content, you’ll know I’m particular about the trends I embrace. Everything needs to be effortlessly wearable and coordinate with my staple wardrobe, accessories, and shoes. This is why I have come to adore the swing minidress. Originally characterized by a slightly fitted bodice and a flared A-line skirt that “swings” from the bust or waist and falls above the knee, today’s chic swing minidresses differ significantly from the Mary Quant mini made famous in the ’60s. Recently, swing silhouettes were prevalent on the runways of London and Paris for spring/summer 2025, from the Chloé runway that birthed Alexa Chung’s iconic swing mini moment to shows by Christopher Esber and Miu Miu. Each style felt unique and fresh, yet they all shared a common element: their swing minidresses reflected the 2010s “dollcore” aesthetic, a style that has been steadily gaining popularity. Swing dresses often blend with other well-known styles, like babydoll dresses or cotton designs with lace trim, and there are no strict rules for swing styles; if the skirt flares out, it fits the mold!

Alexa Chung's babydoll swing mini dress perfectly embodies this trend due to its slightly flared skirt! It came as no surprise when high street brands followed closely behind luxury fashion houses shortly after fashion month. Brands such as Reformation, Ganni, Rixo, and Réalisation Par have released a wide array of swing minidresses, appealing to both Gen Z and millennials. With bold prints and lace broderie details, the market is flooded with options right now. And the best part? They transition beautifully into autumn when paired with tights and boots.

Layered under a coat and styled with tights and loafers, this dress will maintain the same effortless vibe in summer as it does with flip-flops or sandals. While the outfit combination may change, the allure of the swing minidress remains constant. Keep scrolling to discover the 18 best swing minidresses currently available on the market.
